Iron and steel imports in first quarter of 2026

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics figures from the Customs Department, in the first quarter of 2026, the country imported nearly 3.62 million tonnes of iron and steel, worth of nearly US$2.61 billion, with an average price of US$719.85/tonne, a decrease of 3.33% in volume, a decrease of 1.52% in value, but an increase of 1.86% in price compared to the first quarter of 2025.
In March of 2026 alone, the imports of iron and steel exceeded 1.24 million tonnes of iron and steel, equivalent to nearly US$891.46 million, with an average price of US$717.91/tonne, an increase of 42.22% in volume and an increase of 31% in value compared to February of 2026, but a decrease of 7.89% in price. Compared to March of 2025, there was a 0.68% increase in volume, but a 2.13% decrease in value and a 2.79% decrease in price.
The largest source of imported iron and steel in Vietnam was China, with 1.58 million tonnes, equivalent to over US$1.06 billion, at a price of US$670.6/tonne, a decrease of 29.82% in volume and a 24.58% decrease in value compared to the first quarter of 2025, but a slight increase in price of 7.46%; accounting for 43.73% of the total volume and 40.74% of the total value of iron and steel imports nationwide. In March of 2026 alone, the imports from China totaled 533,049 tonnes of iron and steel, equivalent to nearly $367.03 million, with an average price of $688.54 per tonne, a 43.9% increase in volume, a 47.82% increase in value, and a 2.73% increase in price compared to February of 2026. Compared to March of 2025, there was a decrease of 25.01% in volume, a decrease of 20.66% in value, but an increase of 5.81% in price.
Following the main market of China was the Indonesian market, with the imports reaching 496,070 tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, equivalent to US$520.95 million, at an import price of US$1,050/tonne, a 59.45% increase in volume and a 39.89% increase in value, but a 12.27% decrease in price compared to the first quarter of 2025, accounting for 13.71% of the total volume and 20% of the total value.
The next was the Japanese market, with imports reaching 442,800 tonnes, valued at US$306.69 million, at a price of US$692.62/tonne, a 22.35% decrease in volume and a 17.7% decrease in value, but a 5.98% increase in price compared to the first quarter of 2025, accounting for 12.23% of the total volume and 11.77% of the total value of iron and steel imports nationwide.
