Japan - Vietnam's important shrimp market
Tuesday, April 14,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - Japan continues to be one of Vietnam's important and stable shrimp markets.
Over the years, Vietnamese shrimp exports to this market have fluctuated according to the general economic and consumption cycles of Japan, but have maintained their role as a major, valuable, and high-standard destination.
According to Vietnam Customs data, as of March 15, 2026, Vietnamese shrimp exports to Japan reached US$89 million, a 2% increase compared to the same period, accounting for 10.4% of Vietnam's total shrimp exports to all markets; Japan is currently Vietnam's third largest shrimp consumer market, after China and the EU.
The structure of Vietnamese shrimp exports to Japan is quite stable. Whiteleg shrimp continues to be the main product. In 2025, whiteleg shrimp exports to Japan reached US$386.7 million, accounting for approximately 65-70% of the total export value. Black tiger shrimp ranked second with $93.2 million and continued to play a significant role in the high-value segment. Other shrimp varieties include red shrimp, krill, iron shrimp, brown shrimp, shrimp paste, lead shrimp, striped shrimp, and several other specialized varieties, but their market share was not large.
Notably, in the Japanese market, the differentiation by species is clearly linked to consumer segments. Whiteleg shrimp is suitable for mainstream, stable products, serving a wide range of retail and food service industries. Meanwhile, black tiger shrimp still holds a unique position in the higher-end product group, although its scale has decreased compared to about 4-5 years ago due to the impact of rising living costs on Japanese consumers.
