Middle East tensions hit logistics and exports
The ongoing Middle East conflict has begun affecting several of Vietnam’s key agricultural commodities, including pepper, mainly through disruptions to global logistics.
According to Le Viet Anh, Secretary General of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), the Middle East accounted for about 15% of Vietnam’s pepper exports, making it an important market for the industry.
If the conflict persists, it could significantly impact Vietnam’s pepper exports, not only to the Middle East but also to other major markets such as the United States and Europe.
Exporters have already faced mounting logistics challenges. Shipping companies have increased freight charges for cargoes currently in transit, pushing transportation costs three to four times higher than previously.
Meanwhile, new shipments have struggled to secure vessels, as many shipping lines have hesitated to pass through Middle Eastern sea routes due to rising risks.
The situation could weigh further on Vietnam’s pepper exports, especially as Europe and the Americas accounted for nearly 47% of the country’s pepper export volume in 2025, with most shipments normally passing through Middle Eastern shipping lanes.
by 2,000–2,500 dong per kilogram, while global pepper prices remained largely unchanged, with only minor declines reported in Indonesia.
Global pepper prices largely steady
In the international market, pepper prices showed little change compared with the previous session.
Indonesian Lampung black pepper was traded at $7,029 per metric ton, down 0.18%, while Muntok white pepper was priced at $9,306 per ton, also falling 0.18%.
Malaysian Kuching ASTA black pepper held steady at $9,100 per ton, and the country’s ASTA white pepper remained at $12,100 per ton.
In Brazil, ASTA 570 black pepper was quoted at $6,100 per ton, unchanged.
Vietnam’s export prices were reported at $6,400 per ton for 500 g/l black pepper and $6,500 per ton for 550 g/l black pepper, while white pepper was traded at $9,150 per ton.
Overall, global pepper prices were mostly stable, with slight declines only recorded in Indonesia.
