Vietnam pepper prices steady on Feb 5; exports to China jumped in January

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam were steady in morning trade on Thursday, trading in a range of 149,000–151,000 dong per kilogram, while exports to China surged sharply in January, industry data showed.

In the Central Highlands, pepper prices in Dak Lak and Dak Nong were quoted at 151,000 dong per kg. Prices in Gia Lai, Dong Nai, Ba Ria–Vung Tau and Binh Phuoc were seen at around 149,000 dong per kg. Prices were unchanged from the previous session.
On the global market, the International Pepper Community (IPC) quoted Indonesian Lampung black pepper at $6,740 per metric ton. Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 slipped 0.82% to $6,100 per ton, while Malaysian Kuching black pepper ASTA stood at $9,000 per ton. White pepper prices were mixed, with Indonesian Muntok quoted at $9,275 per ton, up marginally, and Malaysian white pepper ASTA at $12,000 per ton.
Vietnamese black pepper was traded at $6,400 per ton for the 500 g/l grade and $6,600 per ton for the 550 g/l grade, while white pepper was quoted at $9,150 per ton. The IPC adjusted prices for Indonesian and Brazilian pepper in opposite directions.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, Vietnam exported 21,743 metric tons of pepper of all kinds in January, including 17,557 tons of black pepper and 4,186 tons of white pepper. Export revenues reached $139 million, with black pepper accounting for $109.7 million and white pepper for $29.3 million.
Export volumes fell 3.2% from December but jumped 66.2% from the same month a year earlier. Average export prices for black pepper stood at $6,494 per ton, unchanged from December, while white pepper averaged $8,450 per ton, down $115 from the previous month.
The United States remained Vietnam’s largest export market, importing 5,154 tons, or 23.7% of total shipments, down 17.3% from December. China ranked second with 3,339 tons, accounting for 15.4% of total exports and marking a sharp increase of 53.2% month on month. The United Arab Emirates imported 1,549 tons, down 32.7% from December.
Nedspice Vietnam, Phuc Sinh and Simexco Dak Lak were the largest exporters, shipping 1,848 tons, 1,641 tons and 1,595 tons respectively.
Meanwhile, Vietnam imported 4,681 tons of pepper in January, including 3,488 tons of black pepper and 1,193 tons of white pepper, with import values reaching $26.2 million. Imports surged 91.4% from December and rose 157.6% year on year. Cambodia, Brazil and Indonesia were the top suppliers, providing 2,326 tons, 1,284 tons and 668 tons respectively.
