Vietnam rice market on Feb 5: rice prices rose, fresh paddy fell

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, Vietnam’s domestic rice market showed mixed movements in morning trade on Thursday, with rice prices edging higher while fresh paddy prices declined by about 100 dong per kilogram. Trading activity remained thin, particularly for the Winter-Spring crop.

According to updates from the An Giang Department of Agriculture and Environment, fresh IR 50404 paddy fell by 100 dong to 5,400–5,500 dong per kg, while fresh OM 5451 declined by 200 dong to 5,800–6,000 dong per kg. In contrast, OM 4218 rose by 200 dong to 6,200–6,400 dong per kg, while fresh OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 both increased by 200 dong to 6,500–6,700 dong per kg. Fresh OM 34 was quoted at 5,200–5,400 dong per kg, largely unchanged from the weekend.
Market activity across major producing areas remained subdued. In An Giang, transactions were slow with prices fluctuating slightly. In Can Tho, purchases of Winter-Spring paddy were limited and prices were relatively stable. Farmers in Dong Thap held firm on prices, with demand improving slightly for near-harvest aromatic paddy, keeping prices steady. In Ca Mau, Vinh Long and Tay Ninh, new transactions were scarce and prices saw little movement.
In the rice market, export-grade rice prices edged higher. CL 555 export rice rose by 100 dong to 8,200–8,300 dong per kg, while OM 18 export rice increased by 100 dong to 8,900–9,100 dong per kg. Other varieties were mostly stable, with OM 380 at 7,600–7,770 dong per kg, OM 5451 at 8,800–8,900 dong per kg, Dai Thom 8 at 8,650–8,800 dong per kg, IR 504 at 7,650–7,750 dong per kg and Soc Thom at 7,500–7,600 dong per kg. Finished IR 504 rice was quoted at 9,500–9,700 dong per kg.
By-products traded in the range of 7,450–11,500 dong per kg. Broken IR 5451 rice was quoted at 7,450–7,550 dong per kg, while rice bran prices stood at 10,500–11,500 dong per kg.
Trading activity remained muted at major hubs. In An Giang, buying interest was limited and prices were broadly stable. In Sa Dec, Dong Thap, prices of aromatic rice, OM 5451 and CL 555 inched up slightly, while other grades were unchanged. In An Cu, Dong Thap, transactions were thin and retail demand was weak.
Retail rice prices were mostly flat. Nang Nhen rice was quoted at the highest level of 28,000 dong per kg, Huong Lai at 22,000 dong per kg, Thai fragrant long-grain rice at 20,000–22,000 dong per kg, Nang Hoa at 21,000 dong per kg, Taiwanese fragrant rice at 20,000 dong per kg, Jasmine rice at 14,000–15,000 dong per kg, and common white rice at around 16,000 dong per kg.
In the export market, Vietnam’s rice prices were steady, according to the Vietnam Food Association. Fragrant rice with 5% broken was quoted at $415–$430 per metric ton, 100% broken rice at $315–$319 per ton, and Jasmine rice at $426–$430 per ton.
