Vietnam’s fruit, vegetable market in 2025: Exports hit record high

 Wednesday, January 28,2026

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export turnover was estimated at 8.5 billion USD in 2025, the highest level since the country began exporting produce, and moving toward the USD10 billion milestone in 2026. December exports alone reached about 750 million USD.

Key export products included durian, dragon fruit, mango, banana, and lychee. Major export destinations were China, the EU, the United States, India, and the UAE. Leading enterprises are increasingly focusing on quality enhancement and value chain development. Exports of fruits and vegetables to China increased by 19% last year to an all-time high of US$5.5 billion. It also marked the highest annual growth ever, according to the latest customs data.
Vietnam exported $8.56 billion worth of fruits and vegetables in all. The second largest buyer was the U.S., which accounted for 6% of shipments, followed by South Korea and Japan at 4% and 3% respectively.
Vietnam shipped 22.5% of all of China’s fruit and vegetable purchases last year, up from 18.27% in 2024 and behind only Thailand. The increase was driven by some key items like durian and banana.
Demand for durian in China rose sharply last year while Vietnamese supply was abundant and available for most of the year.
Banana exports also surged thanks to competitive prices and shorter transportation times compared to rivals in South America.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said exports to China fell in the first half of 2025 due to new requirements and quality control measures, but Vietnamese businesses quickly adapted and exports bounced back in the last few months of the year. But there is more room for growth despite possible headwinds this year, he said.
China is expected to tighten traceability requirements from June, which could hamper exports, especially of durian and banana, if businesses do not prepare in advance, he added.
Fruit and vegetable imports up 24%
In 2025, Vietnam was expected to spend over USD3 billion on fruit and vegetable imports, up 24% year on year, with China being the largest supplier.
U.S. fruits and vegetables are pouring into Vietnam, with 2025 imports rising by nearly 67% to US$900 million, but Vietnamese exports to the U.S. are not keeping pace.
This marked a 10-fold jump in imports from the U.S. from a decade ago, with cherries, apples, grapes, and oranges being among the top fruits bought, according to Vietnam Customs. Vietnam’s vegetable and fruit exports to the U.S. were worth $546 million last year, a minuscule 1.49% share in a market is dominated by suppliers such as Mexico, Canada and South American countries.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said the U.S. is a very large market but also one marked by stringent technical standards and also long geographical distance for Vietnam.
Vietnam’s position as the 13 largest fruit and vegetable supplier to the U.S. is owed to the great efforts made by businesses in recent years, he added.
There is room for growth as the list of fresh fruits permitted for export to the U.S. continues to expand, and now includes pomelo, mango, dragon fruit, longan, lychee, star apple, rambutan and, most recently, coconut.
Consumer trends in the U.S. are shifting toward novel fruits, health-oriented products and more deeply processed items such as frozen fruit, dried fruits and juices, with Vietnamese products like coconut, durian and pomelo becoming increasingly popular.
But exports do face many challenges. Starting this month the U.S. began tightening regulations on traceability and food safety, particularly with respect to pesticide residues.
Vietnamese oversight of planting area codes and packing facilities remains uneven, which threatens to bring warnings or even temporary import suspensions by the U.S.
The high logistics costs due to the distance make it difficult for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to compete on price with suppliers close to the U.S. such as in Mexico, Peru or Thailand.
U.S. policies to protect domestic agriculture and trade defense measures have become random with the new Trump Administration.
