Fruit and vegetable exports to China reached nearly $5.5 billion

 Wednesday, January 21,2026

AsemconnectVietnam - Fruit and vegetable exports to China in 2025 reached a record high, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total industry turnover, affirming the leading market role of Vietnamese agricultural products.

According to the latest statistics from the Vietnam Customs Department, the total export turnover of fruits and vegetables for the year reached over $8.56 billion, an increase of nearly 20% compared to 2024.
The Chinese market alone brought in approximately $5.5 billion, accounting for over 64% of the total export value and becoming the decisive driving force for the overall growth of the entire industry.
Compared to the previous year, fruit and vegetable exports to China increased by nearly 19%, equivalent to over $870 million. This is the highest increase ever, both in absolute scale and contribution share.
The acceleration was evident in the last months of the year, with exports to this market reaching approximately US$523 million in December of 2025 alone, an increase of nearly 15% compared to the previous month and 75% higher than the same period in 2024.
At this rate, Vietnam is the fastest-growing country among the top 10 largest suppliers of fruits and vegetables to China. As a result, Vietnam's market share of fruits and vegetables in China has increased sharply from 18.27% to 22.55%, continuing to hold the position of the second largest supplier, only after Thailand.
The main driving force behind this breakthrough comes from key products, with durian playing a leading role. The demand for durian in China is increasing sharply, while Vietnam has the advantage of large production volume, a long harvest season, and increasingly stable official export capabilities.
Bananas are also rapidly expanding their market share thanks to abundant supply, competitive prices, and shorter shipping times compared to competitors from South America.
Dragon fruit, although no longer experiencing explosive growth as in previous periods, maintains stable production, playing a fundamental role in the export structure to this market.
Compared to other major markets, China's role is increasingly prominent. The exports of fruits and vegetables to the US reached only about $547 million, accounting for over 6% of total export value, while South Korea and Japan accounted for less than 4% and 3% respectively. This disparity shows that China is not only the largest market but also the driving force behind the growth of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry in the past year.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, this is a record export level for the entire industry. He stated that although Vietnamese businesses faced considerable difficulties in the first half of 2025 due to China's implementation of new technical requirements and control measures, they quickly adapted.
Improving product quality, perfecting production processes, strengthening traceability, and promoting official exports helped Vietnamese fruits and vegetables achieve a strong breakthrough in the final months of the year.
Looking ahead to 2026, Mr. Nguyen believes that fruit and vegetable exports still have room for growth, but risks are also increasing.
From June of 2026, China is expected to tighten traceability requirements under Orders 248 and 249.
If businesses do not adequately prepare planting area codes, packaging facilities, and compliance documentation, exporting to this market will face many challenges, especially for high-volume products such as durian and bananas.
