The People’s Committee of Phu Quoc Special Zone in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang is accelerating the implementation of projects serving the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in 2027 (APEC 2027).
Simultaneously, the committee is also carrying out land-origin verification, vocational transition support, job placement, resettlement and other policies for people affected by site clearance.
The locality is reviewing a list of officials, Party members, civil servants and public employees on the island who own land, as well as those whose relatives have land subject to recovery for infrastructure projects serving APEC 2027. This move aims to ensure transparency, prevent misconduct and maintain discipline, while strengthening communications and mobilisation to speed up compensation and site clearance.
It is urgently rolling out a series of key infrastructure projects in preparation for the event, with priority given to building resettlement areas to stabilise the lives of affected residents and ensure construction progress on schedule.
The 23.87-ha An Thoi resettlement area has 200 land plots with a total investment of 1.6 trillion VND (60.9 million USD). On-site measurement and inventory have been completed, while off-site appraisal for all 485 affected households has reached 100%, creating favourable conditions for construction.
The Cua Can resettlement area spans 98.2 hectares and is expected to create 3,620 plots, with a total investment of 1.65 trillion VND. More than 96 hectares of the site are forest land managed by the Phu Quoc National Park. Procedures to convert land-use purposes have been completed, contractors selected, and construction preparations are underway.
Meanwhile, the Ho Suoi Lon resettlement area covers 30.15 hectares, providing more than 690 land plots and apartment land for 637 units, with a total investment of 1.3 trillion VND. Measurement progress has reached just over 62% due to difficulties in contacting landowners and limited cooperation from some households. Authorities are continuing inventory work to finalise compensation plans.
The Ham Ninh resettlement area spans 102.85 hectares, creating 3,055 plots with a total investment of 1.2 trillion VND. The project also involves forest land managed by the Phu Quoc National Park, with land-use conversion completed, contractors selected and construction preparations underway.
Beyond these resettlement projects, site clearance is underway for other key investments, including the Cua Can and Duong Dong 2 reservoirs, provincial road DT.975, the APEC Boulevard, the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport, and several mixed-use urban and eco-tourism developments.
The airport expansion project has been hampered by complex land encroachment. Authorities have identified 66 cases of illegal land occupation covering more than 47.6 hectares, of which 62 have been resolved. The other four remain under handling in accordance with regulations.
Chairman of the Phu Quoc Special Zone People’s Committee Tran Minh Khoa said the locality is urgently implementing coordinated site clearance solutions to ensure APEC-related projects are completed on schedule. Contractors have begun work on cleared land, deploying multiple construction fronts and organising round-the-clock shifts, despite challenges related to material shortages and weather-dependent sea transport./.
