Vietnam’s car imports increased in 2025

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2025, the whole country imported 205,630 complete cars of all types, equivalent to US$4.74 billion, an increase of 18.6% in quantity and 31.1% in value compared to 2024.

According to the statistics from the Customs Department, in December of 2025, the whole country imported 14,707 cars, equivalent to US$406.39 million, a decrease of 19.9% in quantity and a decrease of 10.8% in value compared to November of 2025; but an increase of 14.9% in quantity and an increase of 35.2% in value compared to December of 2024.
Last year, Vietnam imported 205,630 complete automobiles of all types, equivalent to US$4.74 billion, an increase of 18.6% in quantity and 31.1% in value compared to 2024.
Indonesia was the leading market supplying complete automobiles to Vietnam in 2025, reaching 78,156 units, equivalent to over US$1.1 billion, an increase of 10.5% in quantity and 6.5% in value, accounting for 38% of the total quantity and 23.3% of the total value.
In December of 2025 alone, the country’s imports of cars from this market decreased by 19.4% in quantity and 22.2% in value compared to the previous month, reaching 5,794 units, equivalent to US$78.61 million. Cars imported from Indonesia to Vietnam were mainly affordable models in the popular 7-seater MPV segment, B-segment crossovers, or A-segment compact cars… Among them, Mitsubishi Xforce, Xpander, and Toyota Yaris Cross are some of the best-selling imported cars from Indonesia in Vietnam.
Thailand was the second largest supplier of complete cars to Vietnam. In December of 2025, the imports of cars from this market reached 3,860 units, equivalent to US$85.7 million, a decrease of 19.3% in quantity and 12.2% in value compared to November of 2025. Overall in 2025, the imports of cars from Thailand reached 66,109 units, equivalent to US$1.32 billion, an increase of 3.7% in quantity and 6.6% in value compared to 2024; accounting for 32.2% of the total quantity and 27.9% of the total value of car imports nationwide. Most of these were models in the 7-seater SUV, pickup truck, or D-segment sedan categories, etc.
Following that was the Chinese market with 47,895 units, equivalent to US$1.6 billion, accounting for 23.3% of the total quantity and 33.7% of the total value of completely assembled car imports nationwide, showing a strong increase in both quantity and value compared to 2024, with increases of 53.9% and 75.7% respectively. In December of 2025 alone, imports from this market decreased by 18.7% in quantity and 4% in value compared to November of 2025, reaching 4,065 units, equivalent to US$151.01 million. Besides commercial vehicles, there were also passenger cars with internal combustion engines, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and electric cars.
According to industry experts, the diverse needs and preference for imported cars among Vietnamese consumers continue to drive businesses to import many new models into Vietnam. In addition, the restructuring of production and import of popular car models from Southeast Asian markets by some traditional car manufacturers, aimed at taking advantage of the 0% import tax (for vehicles with a regional localization rate of over 40%), is also a factor driving the growth of imported cars.
Toyota's best-selling model in Vietnam in 2025, the Yaris Cross, was still imported from Indonesia. The Xforce and some of Mitsubishi's best-selling Xpander models are also imported from factories in Indonesia. Meanwhile, apart from some Ranger models, the market's best-selling 7-seater SUV, the Ford Everest, is imported from Thailand.
Furthermore, to support automobile production and assembly, businesses in Vietnam also imported a large quantity of automotive components and spare parts worth over $707 million in December of 2025, a 24.1% increase compared to the previous month; while the total value for 2025 was estimated to reach nearly $6 billion, a 21.5% increase compared to 2024.
