Pangasius exports in 2025 saw growth
Tuesday, January 6,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - In 2025, Vietnam's pangasius export value is estimated to reach approximately US$2.1-2.2 billion, exceeding the planned target by about 5%, further affirming pangasius as a pillar industry of freshwater aquaculture.
The area for pangasius farming is expected to remain stable at around 6,400 hectares, with an estimated production of 1.67 million tonnes.
However, changes in politics, trade, tariffs, and increasingly stringent requirements from importing markets are creating significant pressure on pangasius exporting businesses. The development model based on increased production, low costs, and price competition is revealing many limitations and is difficult to maintain a competitive advantage in the medium and long term.
According to information from the 2025 Pangasius Industry Review Conference organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in Can Tho City on December 29, 2025, the orientation for the next phase is to shift strongly from a "volume" mindset to a "value" mindset, with quality, food safety, reputation, and sustainability as the foundation. In this, pangasius breeding is identified as a core element, requiring priority investment in research, management, and close integration between science and production.
Simultaneously, the formation of concentrated breeding and production areas with synchronized infrastructure in key localities of the Mekong Delta will play a crucial role.
For export businesses, the requirement is to proactively upgrade breeding areas, meet international standards, promote digital transformation, traceability, and carbon emission measurement. This is seen as a "passport" for Vietnamese pangasius to increase its presence in high-end markets such as the EU, the US, and Japan, while simultaneously enhancing the value and position of the industry in the global market.
