Shrimp exports accelerate

 Friday, November 28,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's shrimp exports are accelerating strongly in 2025, with a breakthrough from the Chinese market.

However, behind that impressive growth, the value-added gap still exists when most of the products are exported raw, causing Vietnamese businesses to not fully exploit the market's potential.
Vietnam's shrimp exports in 2025 are recording a strong recovery after a period of stagnation.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first 10 months of the year, the Chinese market spent more than 1.1 billion USD to import Vietnamese shrimp, an increase of 64% compared to the same period in 2024. This is a record increase and makes China become Vietnam's largest shrimp import market.
Thanks to the momentum from this market, the total shrimp export turnover of the whole country in 10 months reached 3.9 billion USD, up by 22%, the highest increase in the group of key agricultural and aquatic products. While traditional markets such as the United States, the EU or Japan are still cautious due to rising consumer costs and prolonged inflation, China has emerged as an important "fulcrum" to help the shrimp industry maintain its growth momentum.
Experts say the breakthrough of the Chinese market comes from the rapid expansion of the modern retail system, e-commerce and the trend of consuming convenient foods after the pandemic. Frozen shrimp and pre-processed shrimp - which are the strengths of Vietnamese enterprises, are in great demand here.
Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy Secretary General of VASEP, said: the increase of 64% is a number "rare in recent years". When China's import policy is adjusted to be more stable, Vietnamese enterprises have more opportunities to expand their market share, especially in the group of frozen and pre-processed products. However, this is also a fiercely competitive market. “The Chinese market is not as simple as before. Each locality and each distribution channel has its own requirements on size, standards and traceability. If it meets the requirements well, it will expand quickly, if it does not meet the requirements, it will be replaced immediately,” Mr. Nam emphasized.
