Fruits and vegetables accelerate, aiming for the 10 billion USD export milestone

 Wednesday, November 5,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry is making a strong breakthrough, recording an export turnover of more than 7 billion USD in the first 10 months of 2025, an increase of 14% compared to the same period of 2024.

This rise comes not only from key products such as durian, mango, grapefruit, but also thanks to the quick adaptation to the strict requirements of high-end markets and the orientation of standardizing raw material areas.
The boost from key fruits and high-end markets
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the impressive growth of the industry in recent times comes from strategic fruit groups such as durian, banana, mango, jackfruit, coconut and grapefruit. Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Association said: from the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the third quarter, fruit and vegetable exports have made a strong breakthrough thanks to abundant output and clear added value.
In particular, durian is considered the “star” of the year when it is expected to reach a turnover of more than 3 billion USD, making an important contribution to the overall growth.
Not stopping at the Chinese market, Vietnamese fruits are affirming their position in the US, Canada, Japan and most recently Australia - where Vietnamese grapefruit has just been approved for import.
This is an important milestone, demonstrating the ability to meet strict food safety and traceability standards.
According to Mr. Nguyen, the successful opening of the Australian market is a stepping stone for Vietnam to expand to other demanding markets.
He expects the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) to soon complete procedures to export grapefruit to China - a market with great demand, importing about 17-18 billion USD of fruits and vegetables each year, of which Vietnam only accounts for about 4-5 billion USD.
With the advantage of close geographical proximity, low logistics costs and stable supply capacity, Vietnam has a lot of room to increase its market share. However, to maintain sustainable growth, the industry needs to ensure food safety, comply with quarantine and traceability - vital factors when competing in high-end markets.
Adapting new policies, standardizing raw material areas
A current strategic direction is to build standard raw material areas. The pilot project to develop agricultural and forestry raw material areas for consumption and export in the period 2022-2025 is considered the right step, helping Vietnamese agricultural products achieve uniformity, traceability, and meet VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.
However, small-scale, fragmented production is still a big challenge. Limited technical infrastructure and irrigation; weak links between farmers and businesses; and understanding of quarantine regulations of each market still has many shortcomings.
Vietnamese fruits and vegetables accelerate, towards the 10 billion USD export milestone
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry makes a breakthrough, towards the 10 billion USD export milestone.
According to Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam - Deputy Director of the Vietnam SPS Office, Decree 280 shifts from an administrative management model to a risk-based management model, helping to flexibly control and approach international practices. Vietnamese enterprises need to review and update registration codes on the CIFER system; maintain HACCP and ISO 22000 certification for processed goods; and strictly comply with growing area codes and packing facilities for fresh fruits.
The positive point is that the new regulation allows automatic renewal of registration codes for 5 years if the enterprise does not violate - significantly reducing administrative procedures. If Vietnam maintains a transparent control system, businesses will be classified as low-risk and enjoy priority when exporting.
With stable growth momentum, proactive adaptation to new regulations and the orientation of standardizing raw material areas, the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry is facing a golden opportunity to reach the 10 billion USD export milestone. This success not only affirms the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products, but also demonstrates a strategic vision towards quality, transparency and sustainable development in the international market.
