2024 - 2025 crop year: Coffee export turnover reaches historic high

 Friday, October 31,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - 2024-2025 crop year ended with a historic milestone when Vietnam's coffee export turnover reached more than 8.4 billion USD, the highest level ever.

A historic crop year for the coffee export industry
Talking to a reporter from Cong Thuong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee - Cocoa Association (VICOFA), said that the 2024-2025 crop year (from October 2024 to September 2025) recorded the highest export turnover in history of Vietnamese coffee industry, reaching more than 8.4 billion USD with an output of over 1.5 million tonnes, an increase of 1.8% in volume and 55.5% in value compared to the 2023-2024 crop year. Average export price reached 5,610 USD/tonne, up 52.7%, reflecting trend of high world coffee prices throughout the last crop year.
In the first 9 months of 2025 alone, Vietnam's coffee exports reached about 1.25 million tonnes, reaching more than 7 billion USD, up 11.7% in volume and 62.2% in value compared to the same period last year.
According to VICOFA, unlike previous crop year, when turnover increased but output decreased, 2024-2025 crop year marked a steady growth in both volume (nearly 6%) and value, helping turnover increase by about 3 billion USD. Of which, the top 20 enterprises accounted for 85% of the total volume and value of green coffee bean exports.
Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai added that Vietnam's coffee export price reached its highest level ever, at times reaching 5,850 USD/tonne. Europe continues to be the main market, with more than 710,000 tonnes, worth over 4 billion USD, accounting for nearly half of the total volume and value of Vietnamese coffee exports. 27 EU countries alone contribute 40.1% in volume and 39.4% in value.
Notably, in recent years, coffee growers are no longer under financial pressure as many agricultural products such as durian, pepper and coffee have had good harvests and prices. With characteristic that coffee can be stored for a long time without affecting its quality, farmers proactively hoard their goods, only selling when the price reaches expectations, contributing to regulating supply and demand and positively affecting world market prices.
According to Mr. Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, the last crop year was "a year of great success" for Vietnamese coffee industry. Success comes not only from high prices but also from efforts to improve quality, develop specialty coffee, achieve sustainability certification and international standards, helping to raise the position of Vietnamese coffee beans, avoid price pressure and create sustainable value.
Mr. Le Duc Huy, Chairman of Board of Directors of 2-9 Dak Lak Import-Export Company Limited (Simexco Daklak), said that the record turnover partly comes from contracts signed from the end of 2024, when world coffee prices increased sharply due to supply shortages. Over the past 10 years, quality of Vietnamese Robusta coffee has been significantly improved thanks to improved production processes, being prioritized by global roasters and sold at higher prices than many other countries.
In addition, businesses have promoted deep processing, specialty coffee production, increased investment in technology and traceability, and made good use of free trade agreements (EVFTA, UKVFTA, CPTPP), thereby increasing export value and expanding markets.
Despite facing increasingly stringent trade barriers and technical regulations, according to experts, this is what is motivating Vietnamese businesses to change their production and business models to be more flexible and proactive, aiming to export high-quality, sustainable and environmentally responsible coffee.
Towards target of tens of billions of USD, increasing output, promoting deep processing
Entering 2025-2026 crop year, Vietnamese coffee industry is forecast to continue to maintain positive growth momentum, with output expected to increase by about 10% and export prices remaining high.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, there are three main factors contributing to the increase in output: favorable weather in growing areas, coffee prices remaining high for a long time, and farmers increasing investment in garden care, thereby significantly improving productivity compared to previous years.
"Domestic coffee prices have remained high for more than two years, usually above VND100,000/kg, even exceeding VND130,000/kg at times. Currently, the price is still around VND115,000/kg, creating a strong motivation for growers and workers to invest in their gardens," said Mr. Hai.
At the same time, soaring price of Arabica coffee in the world is pushing up Vietnam's Robusta, opening up an optimistic outlook for exports in the new crop year. Vietnam is currently the second largest coffee exporter in the world and the leading exporter of Robusta coffee, but 85% of the output is still raw coffee beans and does not have a strong brand.
Therefore, development focus of the industry in the coming period is determined to be improving quality, promoting deep processing and building a national brand for Vietnamese coffee. According to Mr. Hai, to achieve this goal, the industry needs to reorganize production according to new market standards, promote sustainable certification, traceability and invest in modern processing technology.
A major advantage of Vietnam today is that it meets European Union's Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), a strict standard that not many coffee exporting countries can meet. This is considered a “passport” for Vietnamese coffee to expand its market share in Europe, the world’s largest coffee consuming region.
With high export prices, expanded processing capacity and an increasingly diverse international market, Vietnamese coffee industry is closer than ever to the target of 10 billion USD in export turnover. This achievement not only affirms resilience of a key industry, but also demonstrates Vietnam’s strategic shift in the global coffee value chain towards sustainable, responsible and environmentally friendly development in the era of green economy.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien, in the coming time, the Ministry will continue to promote export of specialty coffee, deep-processed coffee and instant coffee, focusing on the high-quality Robusta segment, while expanding exports to potential markets in addition to traditional markets such as the EU, the US and Japan.
“Vietnamese coffee industry has a great opportunity to reposition its image from a raw material exporting country to a country providing high-quality and sustainable processed products,” Mr. Tien emphasized.
