Vietnam–Netherlands trade exchange grows positively thanks to EVFTA

The period 2020–2024 witnessed strong growth in bilateral trade between Vietnam and the Netherlands, with EVFTA playing a vital role.
According to data from the International Trade Centre (ITC) under the WTO, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and the Netherlands reached USD14.2 billion in 2024, a sharp increase of 43% compared with USD8.08 billion in 2020, when EVFTA started implementation.
Vietnam’s exports to the Netherlands continuously recorded strong growth, hitting nearly USD13 billion in 2024, up more than 46% compared with almost USD7 billion in 2020. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s imports from the Netherlands have remained above USD1 billion, peaking at USD1.4 billion in 2023.

According to Vietnam Customs, in the first seven months of 2025, two-way trade between Vietnam and the Netherlands reached USD7.92 billion, of which Vietnam’s exports stood at USD7.45 billion and imports from the Netherlands at nearly USD469 million. As a result, Vietnam achieved a trade surplus of more than USD6.98 billion with the Netherlands during this period.
In July 2025 alone, bilateral trade amounted to nearly USD1.26 billion, with exports at over USD1.19 billion and imports at more than USD62 million, yielding a trade surplus of over USD1.13 billion.

Vietnam’s exports to the Netherlands
In the first seven months of 2025, Vietnam’s exports to the Netherlands reached nearly USD7.5 billion, up 2.6% year-on-year. Computers, electronic products and components were the top export items with nearly USD1.8 billion, followed by machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts with USD1.3 billion.
Other key exports included footwear, textiles and garments, telephones and components, as well as agricultural products such as cashew nuts and coffee.

Vietnam’s imports from the Netherlands
According to Vietnam Customs, in the first seven months of 2025, imports from the Netherlands reached over USD468.6 million, up 11.88% year-on-year. In July 2025 alone, imports stood at over USD62.4 million, down 12% from July 2024.
Machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts were the leading import group with a value of over USD111.5 million, up 38.89% year-on-year, followed by pharmaceuticals with nearly USD55.9 million, up more than 25%.

Impact assessment of EVFTA
· Trade balance: According to ITC (WTO), since 2020—the year EVFTA entered into force—until the end of 2024, two-way trade between Vietnam and the Netherlands has continuously expanded. In particular, in 2024 bilateral trade turnover grew by 43.1% compared with 2020, reaching over USD14.2 billion.
During 2020–2024, Vietnam consistently enjoyed a trade surplus with the Netherlands. In 2024, Vietnam’s trade surplus reached nearly USD11.8 billion, almost 50% higher than the surplus of over USD5.9 billion in 2020, when EVFTA began implementation.
