Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU surge in the first five months of 2025 thanks to EVFTA

 Tuesday, September 23,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - The EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), effective since August 2020, has created a major push for Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU. According to data from Vietnam Customs, from just USD64 million in August 2020, Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU have increased 7.2 times, peaking at USD466 million in March 2025.

In the first five months of 2025, Vietnam exported more than 368,000 tonnes of coffee to the EU, worth USD2.106 billion, up 12% in volume and 88.7% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Coffee exports to the EU accounted for 44% of Vietnam’s total coffee export value, up from 39% in 2024, showing that the EU market share continues to expand thanks to EVFTA tariff preferences.
In May 2025 alone, Vietnam exported 65,412 tonnes of coffee to the EU, worth over USD366.7 million; down 13.45% in volume and 14.5% in value from the previous month; however, compared to May 2024, exports still increased 140% in volume and 222% in value.
Structural shifts and market expansion in the EU
EVFTA not only boosts export turnover but also facilitates a shift in export structure. The main export product remains unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee, which reached USD341 million in May 2025, accounting for 91% of Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU, up 270% YoY. In the first five months, exports of this product totaled USD1.922 billion, a strong increase thanks to EVFTA.
Key markets such as Germany, Italy, and Spain continue to lead in imports, while some new markets such as Sweden and Latvia also recorded sharp increases, reflecting expanded penetration thanks to tariff preferences and stronger price competitiveness.

Clear Competitive Advantages over Non-EU Rivals
Many coffee tariff lines (including extracts and essences – HS 2101) have been reduced to 0%, giving Vietnam a major edge over competitors without an FTA with the EU, such as Brazil or Colombia. This helps Vietnamese coffee (especially Robusta) enhance competitiveness in the EU market, which is price-sensitive and has strong demand for roasted and instant coffee.
New Challenges after EVFTA
Despite the advantages, coffee exports to the EU also face new requirements:
  • EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation): soon to take effect, requiring clear traceability.
  • Competition from intra-EU producers in the coffee extract segment (Germany, Spain).
  • Exchange rate fluctuations (EUR/VND) and high logistics costs affecting profitability.
EU Market Trends and Potential
The EU consumes around 2.5–3 million tonnes of coffee per year, with rising demand for value-added products such as organic, sustainable, and extracted coffee.
Between 2020–2024, EU imports of coffee extracts increased strongly, with Vietnam’s exports growing by nearly 300%, lifting Vietnam from 13th to 6th place among key suppliers.
Solutions to Maximize EVFTA Benefits
  • Proactively adapt to EUDR, increase the share of certified coffee (Rainforest, UTZ, 4C…).
  • Invest in deep processing, promote exports of instant and extracted coffee.
  • Build a national brand and connect with modern distribution systems in the EU.
