Vietnam coffee sets export record, surpassing target 5 years ahead
Monday, September 22,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 8 months of 2025, Vietnam exported 1.2 million tonnes of coffee, earning 6.42 billion USD. This is a new record and surpassing the 2030 target of 6 billion USD 5 years ahead.
Coffee exports in 8 months reached 6.42 billion USD, up nearly 60%
According to the report of Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, coffee export volume in August 2025 is estimated at 95,000 tonnes with a value of 429.1 million USD, bringing total coffee export volume and value in the first 8 months of 2025 to 1.2 million tonnes and 6.42 billion USD, up 8.7% in volume and 59.1% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
Average export price of coffee in the first 8 months of 2025 is estimated at 5,580.1 USD/tonne, up 46.4% compared to the same period in 2024. Germany, Italy and Spain are the 3 largest coffee consuming markets of Vietnam, accounting for market shares of 14.5%, 7.5% and 7.4% respectively. Compared to same period last year, value of coffee exports in the first 8 months of 2025 to German market increased by 2 times, the Italian market increased by 51.5%, Spanish market increased by 60.8%. Among 15 largest export markets, value of coffee exports increased the most in the Mexican market with an increase of 91.2 times and the lowest in the Chinese market with an increase of 11.7%.
In August 2025, the world coffee market recovered thanks to the promotion of technical buying and short-term profit taking. Market also received positive factors from the limited world coffee supply due to the impact of frost on Brazil's coffee harvest, a decrease in Brazilian coffee exports and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) reporting a decrease in inventories.
Price of Robusta coffee futures for September 2025 on the Intercontinental Exchange in Europe (ICE/EU) closed on August 26 at 4,886 USD/ton, up 1,556 USD/tonne, equivalent to 47% compared to the first trading session of the month.
Price of Arabica coffee futures for September 2025 on the Intercontinental Exchange in the US (ICE/US) closed on July 26 at 384.05 US cents/lb, up 100 US cents/lb, equivalent to 35% compared to the first trading session of the month.
Vietnamese coffee enters a period of high-value growth
According to Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in terms of production scale, the country now has about 732,000 hectares of coffee, with an average yield of 2.9 tonnes/ha. Some replanting models yield 4-5 tons/ha. Total output in 2024 is estimated to reach approximately 2 million tons, mainly Robusta.
In just 8 months of 2025, businesses exported 1.2 million tonnes of coffee, earning 6.42 billion USD - a record high in the history of the industry. This result not only affirms the increasingly solid position of Vietnamese coffee in the international market, but also shows that the industry has soon exceeded the target of 6 billion USD in exports by 2030, 5 years ahead of schedule.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Manh, Deputy Director of Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), informed that the project on developing key industrial crops by 2030 was issued by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) in January 2024. According to the project, there are 6 key industrial crops, including coffee. The general goal by 2030 is for this group of plants to achieve an export turnover of 14-16 billion USD, not separated by each plant.
In the past 2 years, Vietnam's coffee exports have grown strongly. Specifically, in 2023, coffee exports reached 5.6 billion USD; from 2024 to now, it has reached 6.5 billion USD. Notably, export output has decreased but value has increased, reflecting the correct orientation of developing high-quality coffee. Currently, recognized coffee varieties must achieve a quality assessment score (cupping score) from 80 points or more; many varieties have reached 81-82 points. Thanks to that, although output has decreased, the added value is still high.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien, in context of many difficulties in domestic and international economic situation, agricultural sector has still achieved positive results, with the whole sector's export growth of 12%, reaching 45.37 billion USD; trade surplus of 13.5 billion USD, up 10.2%. From now until the end of the year, entire agricultural sector will focus on promoting achieved results, overcoming difficulties, promptly handling problems to complete the 2025 target, and at the same time creating a foundation for the period up to 2030.
Regarding coffee industry in particular, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized that it will continue to promote export of high-end specialty coffee, deeply processed products, value-added products and instant coffee, and promote the Robusta coffee segment. In addition, along with maintaining the traditional market, it will continue to continue to expand into potential markets.
Global coffee market is expected to hover around the production level of around 168 million bags (60kg/bag) in 2024, with total demand also around this level, leading to a supply-demand balance. The market is led by major producers such as Brazil and Vietnam and is driven by high consumption demand in markets such as the EU, the US and China.
Coffee market size is estimated to reach 132.13 billion USD in 2024 and is expected to reach 166.39 billion USD in 2029, growing at a CAGR of 4.72% during the forecast period (2024-2029) (according to mordorintelligence). Coffee market is growing due to the increasing culture of consuming coffee as a refreshing drink among young people, especially in India, Italy, the United States, China, Japan, etc. On the other hand, increasing disposable income along with urbanization is the main factor contributing to the growth of the coffee market.
With impressive growth momentum, along with orientation of improving quality and expanding the market, the Vietnamese coffee industry is not only stopping at the target of turnover, but also aiming to build a strong brand, increase deep processing value, and affirm its position on the world coffee map. This will be an important foundation for Vietnamese coffee to conquer new heights in the coming period.
