Rice exporters need to diversify markets

 Thursday, September 11,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - In response to the Philippines' decision to temporarily suspend imports of Vietnamese rice for 60 days (from September 1), the Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that rice exporters proactively diversify their markets.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the rice products that the Philippines has temporarily suspended imports of are regular milled rice and highly milled rice (excluding specialty rice varieties that are not commonly produced by local farmers).
Given the above situation, in order to ensure rice export activities in 2025 and contribute to achieving the annual export target, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued a document requesting the People's Committees of provinces and cities and the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) to promptly inform rice exporters, and at the same time recommend that enterprises actively and proactively seek new markets.
At the same time, we need to review and promptly synthesize information and opinions of the business community on difficulties and problems arising to report appropriate solutions. VFA needs to promptly inform rice export traders to adjust production and business activities accordingly.
Also, we need to strengthen information updates, monitoring and forecasting to provide information on the production situation, domestic and international rice markets to report and propose solutions to the Government, ministries and branches to promote domestic rice consumption.
We should closely coordinate with the Philippine Rice Importers Association to monitor and grasp market information, change policies of neighboring countries to promptly report and propose appropriate solutions. Support member businesses to diversify export markets, strengthen trade promotion, especially traditional partners.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that rice export traders, in addition to maintaining traditional markets, need to proactively seek and exploit new potential markets to disperse risks and adaptability.
We also should actively purchase and temporarily store rice for farmers, strictly implement the provisions of Decree No. 107/2018/ND-CP dated August 15, 2018 of the Government on rice export business and regulations related to rice export business.
