 Monday, September 8,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - After a prosperous 2024, 2025 continued to witness strong growth in Vietnam's car import activities.

According to the latest preliminary statistics of the Customs Department, by the end of August 15, 2025, the total number of imported complete cars of all kinds into Vietnam reached 128,355 units, with a total turnover of 2.82 billion USD.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of imported complete cars increased by 31.3%, equivalent to an increase of 30,588 cars; meanwhile, the turnover also increased sharply by 40.8%.
In the structure of imported cars, cars with 9 seats or more continue to dominate. Specifically, cars with 9 seats or less were 97,018 units, with a total turnover of 1.73 billion USD, accounting for 75.58% in volume and 61.32% in turnover.
A closer look at the monthly car import trend showed an explosion when the number of imported cars remained high for many consecutive months.
If in January, the number of cars decreased sharply when only 7,226 cars were imported with a total turnover of nearly 163.2 million USD, the following months the number of cars increased sharply.
In February, 17,671 cars were imported, with a turnover of 377.62 million USD; in March, the number continued to increase strongly with 21,640 cars, with a turnover of 445.12 million USD, this is also the month with the largest number of imported cars since the beginning of the year.
In the following months, the number of imported cars did not reach the record level as in April but remained high.
Of which, the imports of cars in April reached 18,714 cars, with a turnover of 422.93 million USD; the figure in May recorded 19,042 cars, with a turnover of 426.38 million USD; the figure of June was 18,811 cars, with a turnover of 406.93 million USD; and the figure of July also reached 18,836 cars, with a turnover of 429 million USD.
And in the first half of August (August 1-15), an additional 6,797 cars were imported with a turnover of 165.6 million USD.
Over the past 7 months, the country imported an average of 17,114 cars per month. This number is much higher than the average of 14,463 cars/month in 2024 - the year considered to have a record high number of imported cars in Vietnam.
Thus, from the beginning of 2025 to August 15, an average of 565 completely built-up cars were imported to Vietnam every day.
China market breaks through
Currently, imported cars to Vietnam still come from 3 major markets in Asia: Indonesia, Thailand and China.
Data by market from the Customs Department showed that by the end of July 2025, Vietnam imported 45,282 cars from Indonesia, with a turnover of nearly 645 million USD, an increase of 19% in volume and 15.7% in turnover compared to the same period last year.
With the above results, the country has surpassed Thailand to lead in the number of cars imported by our country.
Although it no longer holds the No. 1 position in market share, the number of cars imported from Thailand remains high. By the end of July, there were 41,988 units with a total turnover of 821.7 million USD, an increase of 28.37% in volume and 30.71% in turnover.
Notably, the past 7 months recorded a sharp increase in the number of imported cars from China with 27,331 units, turnover reaching nearly 888 million USD, an increase of 59% in volume and 70.44% in turnover.
Thus, although only ranked 3rd in terms of vehicle quantity, China leads in turnover.
Vietnam's automobile import activities in 2025, especially from February onwards, have shown a strong recovery and maintained a high growth rate compared to 2024. In general, the imported automobile market in Vietnam from the beginning of 2025 to now has been vibrant, with changes in structure and turnover from major supply markets, especially the strong rise of the Chinese market.
