Despite a temporary halt in rice imports from the Philippines, Vietnam’s exports are projected to exceed 8.2 million tonnes in 2025, supported by rising shipments to Bangladesh, China, and South Africa.
The Philippines – the world’s largest rice importer – bought 4.8 million tonnes of rice in 2024, of which Vietnam supplied 3.6 million tonnes. In the first seven months of 2025, Vietnam exported 5.5 million tonnes worth USD2.81 billion, with the Philippines remaining its top buyer. However, export earnings declined 13.5% year-on-year.
Exporters acknowledged slower shipments to the Philippines but reported signing new contracts at higher prices and expanding into ASEAN and South African markets.
Earlier this month, the Philippine government announced a two-month suspension of rice imports starting September 1, citing falling domestic prices. Still, analysts expect Vietnam’s exports to remain strong thanks to solid demand in Africa and China.
According to the USDA, Vietnam’s full-year rice exports are forecast at 8.2 million tonnes, up 300,000 tonnes from its previous projection. The Philippines’ suspension could reduce its imports by 500,000 tonnes, though full-year demand is still estimated at 4.9 million tonnes, the highest globally.
Do Ha Nam, Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association, expressed confidence that Vietnam’s rice exports will surpass 8 million tonnes in 2025, reaffirming its position as the world’s second-largest rice exporter with a growing international brand identity.
