 Wednesday, August 20,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, domestic rice prices increased by 50–100 VND/kg for some varieties on August 20, 2025.

Late-season paddy supply is limited, and new trade activity remains slow. In the Mekong Delta, rice prices were relatively stable. Supplies are scarce, the domestic rice market is stable, while some export rice materials continue to rise slightly compared to yesterday.
Specifically, according to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang Province:
• Export material rice IR 504 rose by 100 VND/kg to 8,550 – 8,650 VND/kg.
• Export material rice OM 380 increased by 50 VND/kg to 8,300 – 8,400 VND/kg.
• Material rice 5451 remained at 9,500 – 9,650 VND/kg.
• Material rice CL 555 at 8,650 – 8,750 VND/kg.
• Material rice OM 18 at 9,600 – 9,700 VND/kg.
• Finished OM 380 rice traded at 8,800 – 9,000 VND/kg.
• Finished IR 504 rice was 9,500 – 9,700 VND/kg.
By-products ranged between 7,600 – 9,000 VND/kg. Fragrant broken rice was 7,600 – 7,700 VND/kg, while bran traded at 8,000 – 9,000 VND/kg compared to early this week.
Field reports:
• In An Giang, demand remained weak, prices stable.
• In Lấp Vò (Đồng Tháp), limited arrivals, slow trading, steady prices.
• In Sa Đéc (Đồng Tháp), low arrivals, stable prices.
• In An Cư – Đồng Tháp Mới (Cái Bè, Tiền Giang), arrivals picked up slightly, transactions improved, prices stable.
With strategies to improve quality, build brands, and develop sustainable raw material zones, Vietnamese rice not only maintains its position as the world’s No.2 exporter but also has opportunities to break through and affirm its value and reputation globally.
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnam’s 5% broken rice export price currently stands at USD395/tonne, up USD4/tonne from the previous week. Notably, equivalent rice from Thailand, India, and Pakistan is priced lower, having dropped USD1–6/tonne.
• Thailand’s 5% broken rice: USD362/tonne (-USD6).
• India’s: USD379/tonne (-USD1).
• Pakistan’s: USD365/tonne (-USD4).
The rise in Vietnam’s export rice prices is attributed to stockpiling by Philippine buyers ahead of their planned import suspension in September.
Since early 2025, abundant global supply has pressured rice markets. Notably, India lifted export restrictions and boosted shipments after achieving a record 149 million tonnes harvest in the 2024–2025 crop year. Its exports are forecast to rise nearly 25% to a record 22.5 million tonnes in 2025.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s rice exports in Jan–Jul 2025 reached 5.5 million tonnes, worth USD2.8 billion. Despite global challenges, Vietnam still increased export volume by 3.1%, though the average price fell by 19%. Full-year exports are expected to reach 8.8 million tonnes, maintaining Vietnam’s position as the world’s second-largest exporter.
VFA Chairman Do Ha Nam highlighted that even though Vietnam’s export volume rose only slightly, it was a highly positive sign given Thailand’s sharp export decline. Many Thai traders expressed admiration that Vietnam’s rice exports grew while others fell.
Vietnam’s export growth is supported by establishing distinctive rice segments such as OM, DT8, ST, which are exclusive to Vietnam and favored worldwide. Moreover, demand from African markets is rising significantly.
