Sri Lanka pepper overview: According to the IPC’s latest monthly report, from 2015–2024, cultivation area increased by 11,176 ha to 42,846 ha in 2024. In 2025, cultivation area is expected to grow 1% to 43,100 ha.
Sri Lanka’s pepper output grew 29% in the past decade, reaching 36,265 tonnes in 2024—up 36% from 2023. However, in 2025, production is expected to fall 22% to about 28,200 tonnes due to climate challenges such as uneven rainfall, higher temperatures, and other adverse weather conditions affecting yield and quality.
While yields have fluctuated over the decade, the overall trend has improved, averaging 644 kg/ha. In 2024, yield reached 846 kg/ha; in 2025, it is projected to drop 23% to 654 kg/ha.
From 2015–2024, Sri Lanka’s pepper exports averaged about 13,800 tonnes. In 2024, exports reached 25,976 tonnes, up 82% from 2023, with India remaining the top importer, accounting for 92% of Sri Lanka’s exports.
Sri Lanka’s black pepper farm-gate prices have generally risen over the past three years. As of June 2025, the average farm price was USD6,236/tonne, up 19% from June 2024, driven by tighter global supplies, particularly from other major producing countries.
