Vietnam-US trade has increased nearly 300 times

 Wednesday, July 16,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - After 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations, Vietnam-US trade turnover has increased nearly 300 times, reaching nearly 150 billion USD by 2024 - demonstrating the increasingly deep cooperation relationship.

The United States is one of Vietnam's largest trading partners and is the first export market of Vietnam to surpass the 100 billion USD mark. This is an important milestone, affirming Vietnam's position as the leading partner of the United States in ASEAN.
In 2024, Vietnam's export turnover to the United States was estimated to reach nearly 130 billion USD, accounting for 4.18% of total US imports and increasing by 19.3% compared to 2023. The total bilateral import-export turnover in 2024 reached about 149.7 billion USD, increasing by 20.5% compared to 2023.
This remarkable growth comes from many key products of Vietnam. Several products such as machinery, electronic equipment, audio and video recording equipment; footwear; leather products, handbags, wallets, umbrellas; plastics and plastic products; along with toys, games and sports equipment have had positive export growth rates to the US market.
In the opposite direction, the United States also plays a role as an important source of input materials for Vietnam's production activities. Major items imported by the country from the US include cotton, animal feed, corn, soybeans, chemicals, machinery and technology. Increasing imports of these products from the United States also helps to "clean up" the supply chain thanks to certification standards and clear origin of raw materials.
The imports from the United States to Vietnam also recorded strong growth, especially aircraft, equipment and spare parts; chemicals; plastics and plastic products. With an average GDP growth rate of nearly 7% per year and a population of nearly 100 million people, Vietnam is forecast to be a potential market for US companies operating in all fields.
Before the event marking 30 years of normalization of relations between Vietnam and the United States (July 11, 2025), Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Dung said that in this journey, economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and the United States has emerged as a bright spot. Since 1995, two-way trade turnover has only reached about 450 million USD, but by 2024 it has grown impressively to nearly 150 billion USD, equivalent to an increase of about 300 times. This growth has made Vietnam a leading partner of the United States in ASEAN.
The upgrading of relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023 has clearly identified priority areas for future cooperation, especially in economics, trade, and investment. The focus will be on high technology, supply chains, high-tech agriculture, and digital transformation.
In addition, cooperation in science - technology and innovation in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and healthcare are also new highlights. Vietnam is striving to affirm its position as a reliable partner in the US global supply chain.
Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung also emphasized that Vietnam will continue to be a reliable and responsible partner.
