Total export and import turnover in first half of 2025

 Tuesday, July 15,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s total export and import turnover of goods in the first 6 months of the year reached 432 billion USD, up by 16.1% over the same period last year; of which export turnover reached 219.8 billion USD, up by 14.4%; and imports reached 212.2 billion USD, up by 17.9%; trade surplus was 7.6 billion USD, down by 37.5% compared to the trade surplus of goods in the first 6 months of 2024.

In the first 6 months of 2025, the average monthly export turnover increased gradually over the months. Specifically, the average export turnover in 2 months reached 32.13 billion USD/month; the average in 3 months reached 34.26 billion USD/month; the average figure of 6 months reached 36.63 billion USD/month, an increase of 6.9 percentage points compared to the average of the first 3 months of 2025.
The concern that the US's reciprocal tariffs may increase the import turnover of production materials for the second half of this year, made the country’s import turnover in the second quarter of 2025 to 112.52 billion USD, an increase of 18.8% over the same period last year and an increase of 12.9% compared to the first quarter of 2025.
In the first 6 months of the year, the foreign-invested sector dominated the import activities with a turnover of 139.38 billion USD, an increase of 22.3% over the same period last year, accounting for 65.7% of the total import turnover. The domestic economic sector reached 72.82 billion USD, an increase of 10.4%, accounting for 34.3%.
Stable consumption does not create a breakthrough for growth
Low domestic and global aggregate demand have constrained the economy's production activities, thereby affecting consumption.
The average total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue over the months in the first 6 months of 2025 increased steadily at about 7.2%, about 1.2 percentage points higher than the same period last year, but much lower than the increase in the period before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, domestic consumption trends are changing with more spending on accommodation, food and beverage services and travel. Statistics for the period 2021-2024 and the first quarter of 2025 reflect a strong change in consumption trends.
In 2021, people's spending on accommodation and food services accounted for 8.3% of total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue, spending on tourism accounted for 0.2% of the total. In 2023, these two indicators increased to 11.1% and 1.1%. This consumption trend continued to be affirmed and increased to 11.5% and 1.2% in 2024. These two indicators in the first 6 months of 2025 were 12.0% and 1.3% respectively.
