Daily: Domestic pepper prices remained unchanged on June 25, 2025
Wednesday, June 25,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam ranged from VND123,000 to VND125,000 per kilogram on June 25, 2025. The International Pepper Community (IPC) reported a drop in Vietnam and Brazil’s pepper export prices, while Indonesia’s prices rose slightly. The depreciation of the local currencies in both Vietnam and Brazil against the USD has contributed to the decrease in their export prices.
Specifically:
• In Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces, pepper was purchased at VND125,000/kg.
• In Gia Lai, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, and Binh Phuoc, prices stood at VND123,000/kg.
Morning prices remained unchanged from the previous day, indicating a sideways trend following a sharp recent decline. Weak export performance and market caution over potential U.S. tariff decisions on Vietnamese pepper have contributed to a subdued trading environment.
Global Market (Latest IPC Data):
• Black pepper (Lampung, Indonesia): USD7,465/ton, up 0.7%
• Black pepper (Brazil ASTA 570): USD6,850/ton, down 0.85%
• Black pepper (Kuching, Malaysia ASTA): USD9,000/ton
• White pepper (Muntok, Indonesia): USD10,084/ton
• White pepper (Malaysia ASTA): USD11,750/ton
• Vietnamese black pepper (500 g/l): USD5,800/ton
• Vietnamese black pepper (550 g/l): USD5,900/ton
• Vietnamese white pepper: USD8,800/ton
Vietnam’s export prices fell by another USD200/ton. The IPC adjusted prices downward for Vietnam and Brazil, reflecting currency depreciation impacts, while slightly increasing prices for Indonesia.
Market Comparison – One Year Ago (June 25, 2024):
• Domestic pepper prices ranged from VND145,000 to 146,000/kg
• Vietnamese black pepper export prices were:
o USD5,900/ton (500 g/l)
o USD6,300/ton (550 g/l)
• White pepper: USD8,800/ton
Recent Developments:
Vietnam’s domestic pepper prices have dropped sharply in recent weeks due to Iran-Israel tensions, which have negatively impacted demand from the Middle East and caused order delays.
Meanwhile, tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have led to increased pepper flows from Cambodia into Vietnam. Market concerns also linger over possible U.S. retaliatory tariffs on Vietnamese pepper exports.
Despite the downward trend, the market has not lost its upward momentum. Limited supply, stable consumption, and expectations for new trade agreements continue to provide a foundation for potential price recovery in the near future.
Vietnam's pepper industry sees strong export value growth
Global supply shortages and rising demand for high-quality agricultural products are creating a promising opportunity for Vietnam’s pepper industry to reclaim and strengthen its position in the global export market. This growth potential lies not only in increasing export volumes but also in building strong brand identity and developing value-added products.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), as of mid-May 2025, Vietnam had exported 84,844 tonnes of various types of pepper, earning USD585.2 million. Although the export volume fell by approximately 10% year-on-year, the export value surged by 45%, driven by a sharp rise in global pepper prices.
During the first four months of the year:
• The average export price of black pepper reached USD6,749/tonne, up 96% year-on-year.
• White pepper averaged USD8,611/tonne, marking a 73.8% increase.
The Agency of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Industry and Trade attributed this price growth not only to tightened global supply but also to positive demand signals from key markets such as Europe and the Middle East. Vietnamese exporters are increasingly diversifying their market reach, reducing dependence on a few traditional partners.
Export markets
The United States remained Vietnam’s largest export destination, accounting for 22.5% of total pepper exports, despite a 26.7% decline in volume.
India ranked second with an 8% share, followed by the UAE and Germany at 6.7% each.
Exports to China saw remarkable growth of 94.4%, now accounting for 4.5% of total exports.
Other markets such as Hong Kong (China), Australia, and Poland also posted strong growth.
In contrast, shipments declined to the Netherlands, Russia, the UK, Egypt, Turkey, and France.
Imports and strategic re-export
On the import side, Vietnam purchased 18,388 tonnes of pepper worth USD108.6 million, mainly from Brazil, Indonesia, and Cambodia. This value more than doubled compared to the same period last year. Experts noted that these imports—primarily used for reprocessing and re-export—are part of Vietnam’s routine strategy to maintain its leading position, with the country currently accounting for about 60% of global pepper exports.
Branding and quality control – The weak link
Despite its dominance in export volume, a key limitation of Vietnam’s pepper industry is its over-reliance on raw pepper exports and limited brand presence in international markets.
Hoang Phuoc Binh, former Vice President of the Chu Se Pepper Association in Gia Lai Province, emphasized that although Vietnam exports in large volumes, its products still lack strong brand recognition abroad.
VPSA Chairwoman Hoang Thi Lien stressed that to succeed in high-value, quality-demanding markets, exporters must prioritize quality control to ensure product consistency and resilience against market volatility. This, she noted, is essential for enhancing the long-term competitiveness of Vietnamese pepper on the global stage.
