Vietnam's vehicle and spare parts exports reached 6.7 billion USD
Friday, June 20,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - According to preliminary data from the Customs Department, in May, Vietnam's vehicle and spare parts exports brought in more than 1.4 billion USD, up by 5% over the previous month.
In the first 5 months of the year, the total turnover reached 6.7 billion USD, up by 8.6% over the same period of 2024. This is a remarkable growth rate, affirming Vietnam's increasingly important position on the global supply chain map.
Notably, the US was currently Vietnam's largest importer of this item, with a turnover of more than 1.37 billion USD in the first 5 months of the year, up by 8.4% over the same period last year. It was followed by Japan with more than 1.32 billion USD (up by 14.1%) and South Korea with nearly 700 million USD (up by 2%).
This showed that the US, Japan and South Korea were the three main markets "dominating" this export item from Vietnam.
This remarkable growth is not accidental. Statistics from the Customs Department showed that Vietnam's auto parts export turnover has maintained a double-digit growth rate in recent years.
Explaining this, experts say that this is the result of the process of shifting production from large markets such as China to more potential markets in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.
Vietnamese enterprises have also been keeping up with the demand for large-scale production and are increasingly participating deeply in the global supply chain.
In particular, according to experts from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Vietnamese enterprises possess great strengths in the production of electrical wires for cars. In fact, Vietnam is currently the third largest exporter of this item in the world, after China and India. Major auto hubs such as Japan, the US, the EU and even Thailand are importing automotive electrical cables from Vietnam, affirming Vietnam's position as an important link in the global auto assembly supply chain.
Despite its promise, Vietnam's auto parts export industry also faces new challenges. From May 3, 2025, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) officially applied a 25% tax rate on 332 imported auto parts ranging from mechanical, electronic, transmission to control systems. This is a measure that continues the US government's efforts to protect the domestic auto industry and reduce the trade deficit.
In this context, experts recommend that Vietnam needs to invest more heavily in production technology, quality management and digital transformation. At the same time, promoting FDI cooperation in the supporting industry is extremely important. In particular, it is necessary to accelerate the process of building specialized industrial parks with synchronized logistics and infrastructure to attract more major partners, such as Japan, Germany, the US and South Korea. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has also put forward an ambitious plan: by 2045, the industry will focus on producing electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, vehicles using renewable energy and green fuels. The specific goal is to achieve about 14 billion USD in vehicle and spare parts exports by 2030, and this figure will increase to 36 billion USD by 2045.
