Pepper prices soar by more than 60%, exports surge

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 5 months of 2025, Vietnam exported nearly 100,000 tonnes of pepper, with a turnover of more than 690 million USD, up 40.5% thanks to an average price increase of more than 61%.
Pepper exports decrease in volume but increase in value
According to data from Customs Department, Vietnam's pepper exports in May 2025 reached 26,300 tonnes, worth 182.2 million USD, down 0.4% in volume and down 1.0% in value compared to April 2025; down 15.3% in volume but up 30.6% in value compared to May 2024. In the first 5 months of 2025, Vietnam's pepper exports reached 99,900 tonnes, worth 690.4 million USD, down 12.5% in volume but up 40.5% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
In May 2025, Vietnam's average pepper export price reached 6,923 USD/tonne, down 0.6% compared to April 2025, but up 54.3% compared to May 2024. In the first 5 months of 2025, average pepper export price reached 6,910 USD/tonne, up 61.1% compared to the same period in 2024.
In May 2025, Vietnam's pepper exports to many key markets decreased in volume compared to May 2024, while exports increased to markets such as India, the UK, Egypt, and Russia. Of which, exports to the largest market, the United States, decreased by 9.3%, followed by the German market, which decreased by 13.8%...
In general, in the first 5 months of 2025, Vietnam's pepper exports to key markets had uneven growth in export volume, in which exports to some markets decreased such as: the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Thailand, Egypt, Russia... On the contrary, amount of pepper exported to some markets increased such as: Germany, India, the UK, South Korea...

According to statistics from Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India, India's pepper imports in the first 3 months of 2025 reached 9,900 tonnes, worth 68.5 million USD, up 35.5% in volume and 105.1% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
Average import price of pepper in the first 3 months of 2025 reached 6,920 USD/tonne, an increase of 51.4% over the same period in 2024. Of which, average import price of Indian pepper from Indonesian market reached the lowest level of 5,676 USD/tonne and import price from the Sri Lankan market reached the highest level, reaching 7,257 USD/tonne. India imports pepper from about 30 countries and territories, of which the main suppliers such as Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Indonesia and Brazil accounted for 94.19% of total imports in the first 3 months of 2025.
Notably, India's pepper imports from two markets of Sri Lanka and Indonesia skyrocketed in the first 3 months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, which caused the pepper market share of these two markets in India to also increase sharply, of which, Sri Lanka's pepper market share increased to 43.15% (by volume), from 24.1% in the first 3 months of 2024; Indonesia's market share increased to 15.87%, from 7.89%.
Vietnam is the second largest source of pepper to India. However, India's pepper imports from Vietnam decreased significantly in the first 3 months of 2025, down 24.1% in volume compared to the same period in 2024, causing Vietnam's pepper market share in India to also decrease to 20.66%, from 36.89%. Statistics show that in India, Vietnam's pepper is facing fierce competition with supplies from markets such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Brazil.
