Vietnam’s industrial index in first 5 months of 2025

AsemconnectVietnam - The 5-month industrial production index in 2025 increased by 8.8% over the same period last year, of which the processing and manufacturing industry increased the most with 10.8%.

According to the report of the General Statistics Office (under the Ministry of Finance) on the socio-economic situation in May and the first 5 months of 2025, announced on June 6, 2025, the country’s industrial production in May of 2025 continued to maintain positive growth.
The index of industrial production (IIP) in May 2025 was estimated to increase by 4.3% over the previous month and by 9.4% over the same period last year. Of which, the water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment industry increased by 11.3% over the same period last year; the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 11.0%; electricity production and distribution increased by 3.3%; and the mining industry increased by 1.2%. In the first 5 months of 2025, IIP was estimated to increase by 8.8% over the same period last year (in the same period of 2024, it increased by 7.1%). Of which, the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 10.8% (in the same period in 2024, it increased by 7.6%), contributing 8.8 percentage points to the overall increase; the electricity production and distribution industry increased by 4.2% (in the same period of 2024, it increased by 12.9%), contributing 0.4 percentage points; water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment increased by 10.0% (increased by 5.9% in the same period in 2024), contributing 0.2 percentage points; mining decreased by 3.4% (decreased by 5.0% in the same period in 2024), causing a decrease of 0.6 percentage points.
Also according to the data from the General Statistics Office, the IIP in the first 5 months of 2025 of some key secondary industries increased compared to the same period last year, such as motor vehicle production increased by 34.3%; leather and related products production increased by 16.8%; rubber and plastic products production increased by 16.1%; garment production increased by 15.7%; other means of transport production increased by 14.1%; production of beds, cabinets, tables, chairs increased by 12.8%.
On the contrary, the IIP index of some industries decreased, such as crude oil and natural gas exploitation decreased by 8.8%; production of drugs, pharmaceutical chemicals and medicinal materials decreased by 6.1%; production of electrical equipment decreased by 3.5%.
Some key industrial products in the first 5 months of 2025 increased compared to the same period last year, such as automobiles increased by 70.3%; televisions increased by 25.6%; LPG increased by 21.7%; NPK mixed fertilizer increased by 18.8%; casual clothes increased by 14.6%; rolled steel increased by 13.8%; natural fiber woven fabrics increased by 13.4%; cement increased by 12.9%; steel bars and angle steel increased by 11.7%; footwear, leather sandals increased by 11.5%.
In addition, the number of employees working in industrial enterprises as of May 1, 2025 increased by 1.1% compared to the same period last month and increased by 4.5% compared to the same period last year. Of which, the corresponding rate of state-owned enterprises increased by 0.3% compared to the previous month and increased by 1.1% compared to the same period last year; foreign-invested enterprises increased by 1.3% and increased by 5.3%; non-state enterprises increased by 0.8% and increased by 3.0%.
By industry, the number of employees working in mining enterprises increased by 0.4% compared to the same period last month and decreased by 0.1% compared to the same period last year; the number of employees in the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 1.2% and increased by 4.8%; the electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air conditioning production and distribution industry remained unchanged and increased by 0.8%; the water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment activities increased by 0.1% and increased by 1.5%.
