To boost rice exports through 2030, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) introduced new measures aimed at tighter oversight, accelerating the national export strategy, and enhancing trade promotion. These efforts were unveiled at a conference in Tiền Giang province.
Key actions include expanding international trade negotiations, removing logistical and regulatory barriers, and promoting production restructuring and value chain development. Enterprises are encouraged to invest in deep processing and diversify export markets to reduce reliance on traditional buyers.
Tiền Giang was highlighted for its strategic rice production advantages, with 200 processing facilities capable of handling 3 million tonnes annually and generating about USD100 million in export revenue. Local authorities emphasized the need for investment in raw material zones, upgraded facilities, and brand development.
In the first four months of 2025, Vietnam exported 3.43 million tonnes of rice worth USD1.8 billion—up 8.1% in volume but down 13.3% in value year-on-year. Prices fell to an average of USD515/tonne, mainly due to increased global supply following India’s lifting of its export ban.
Looking ahead, the USDA forecasts global rice production for 2025–26 to reach a record 538.7 million tonnes. However, rising consumption may still trigger supply shortages. Global rice trade is expected to increase to 60.5 million tonnes in 2025 and 61.3 million tonnes in 2026. India is expected to maintain its dominant export position, limiting growth for competitors like Vietnam.
The MoIT also gathered feedback on proposed amendments to existing rice export regulations to better align with evolving global market conditions.
