Wide open doors for Tra fish exports to Brazil
Monday, May 19,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - As Vietnam's third-largest tra fish import market, Brazil's opening of its market to tra fish and allowing the re-export of tilapia will bring many opportunities for Vietnamese seafood exporting enterprises.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Brazil officially suspended the import of tilapia products from Vietnam from February 14, 2024, until a risk assessment conclusion on Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) is reached, according to Decision No. 270 dated February 9, 2024, of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (MAPA).
Vietnam's tilapia export turnover to Brazil is not significant. According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, tilapia exports to Brazil have been almost non-existent in the last five consecutive years.
Brazil mainly imports tra fish from Vietnam. Up to 90% of the seafood products this South American nation purchases from Vietnam are tra fish.
The Vietnam Trade Office in Brazil stated that the subsequent negotiations between the two sides will focus on completing the final technical steps for Brazil to allow the import of all types of frozen tra fish fillets according to recognized international standards and practices.
Therefore, Brazil's opening of its market to tra fish and allowing the re-export of tilapia will bring many opportunities for Vietnamese seafood exporting enterprises. This will contribute to increasing turnover, gradually balancing the trade balance, and moving towards the goal of bringing bilateral trade turnover to USD 15 billion by 2030.
Vietnam's tra fish export turnover to Brazil in the first quarter of 2025 continued to affirm this South American nation as one of the largest destinations for Vietnamese tra fish.
According to the data from Vietnam Customs, in the first half of April of 2025, tra fish exports to Brazil reached 7 million USD, an increase of 31% compared to the same period last year. The total tra fish exports to this market as of April 15, 2025, reached 55 million USD, an increase of 67% compared to the same period of 2024.
