Vietnam’s coal imports totaled over 2.5 billion USD in 4 months

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first four months of 2025, coal imports reached 24.44 million tonnes, equivalent to 2.52 billion USD.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in April of 2025, the country imported 7.16 million tonnes of coal, equivalent to 706.29 million USD, at a price of 98.6 USD/tonne, an increase of 9.9% in volume and 9.1% in value but a decrease of 0.7% in price compared to March of 2025. In comparison to April of 2024, there was a 21.4% increase in volume but a 6% decrease in value and a 22.6% decrease in price.
Overall, in the first four months of 2025, the imports of this commodity group reached 24.44 million tonnes, equivalent to 2.52 billion USD, an increase of 18.8% in volume but a decrease of 6.6% in value compared to the first four months of 2024. The average price in the first four months of 2025 was 103.3 USD/tonne, a decrease of 21.4%.
Vietnam's coal imports mainly originated from three markets: Australia, Indonesia, and Russia. These three markets alone accounted for nearly 81.3% of the country's total coal import value. The imports from Australia reached 7.59 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 958.16 million USD, with an average price of 126.2 USD/tonne, accounting for 31% of the total volume and 38% of the total value of the country's coal imports, an increase of 36.4% in volume but a decrease of 2.7% in value compared to the first four months of 2024, with the import price decreasing by 28.7%.
The second-largest market supplying this commodity group to Vietnam was Indonesia, reaching 9.89 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 805.5 million USD, at a price of 81.5 USD/tonne, accounting for 40.5% of the total volume and 31.9% of the total value, an increase of 24.2% in volume and 8.2% in value but a decrease of 12.8% in price compared to the same period of 2024.
Coal imports from the Russian market accounted for 8.6% of the total volume and 11.4% of the total value, reaching 2.09 million tonnes, worth of 287.01 million USD, an increase of 5.9% in volume, a decrease of 26.7% in value, and a decrease of 30.7% in price compared to the same period last year.
