China surpassed US to become Vietnam’s leading seafood export market
Friday, May 9,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - The impact of reciprocal tariffs has caused a sharp decline in seafood exports to the US, while China has surged ahead to become the leader due to high demand in the high-end segment.
Market share changed significantly
According to data from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first four months of 2025, Vietnam's seafood exports recorded a strong recovery, reaching a turnover of 3.3 billion USD, a 21% increase compared to the same period last year. However, the structure of the export market has undergone a significant change as China has surpassed the US to become the number one destination for Vietnamese seafood.
VASEP pointed out that China (including Hong Kong) imported 709.8 million USD worth of Vietnamese seafood in the past four months, an increase of up to 56% compared to the same period of 2024. In April alone, the turnover reached 182.3 million USD, a 29% increase. The main driving force comes from high demand for shrimp, crab, other crustaceans, and mollusks in the high-end segment.
China surpassed the US to become the leading seafood export market of Vietnam
The US – which was the country’s largest export market in 2024 – has fallen to third place with a turnover of 498.4 million USD, a slight increase of only 7%. In April of 2025, the country’s exports to the US decreased sharply by 15%, reaching only 120.5 million USD. VASEP stated that this decline clearly reflects the impact of the reciprocal tariff policy implemented by the United States.
Meanwhile, the exports to Japan continued to maintain stable growth, reaching 536.6 million USD in the first four months, an increase of 22%. Other markets such as the EU and South Korea also recorded increases of 17% and 15% respectively, with turnovers of 351.5 million USD and 264.1 million USD.
