Iron and steel imports decreased in first 3 months of 2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 3 months of 2025, the whole country imported over 3.74 million tonnes of iron and steel, worth nearly 2.65 billion USD, with an average price of 706.7 USD/tonne, down by 8.5% in volume, down by 9.7% in value and down by 1.3% in price compared to the first 3 months of 2024.

In March of 2025 alone, over 1.23 million tonnes of iron and steel were imported, equivalent to nearly 910.9 million USD, with an average price of 738.5 USD/tonne, down by 20.9% in volume, down by 12.7% in value but up by 10.4% in price compared to February of 2025.
The largest amount of imported iron and steel into Vietnam was from China, with nearly 2.26 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 1.41 billion USD, priced at 624.1 USD/tonne, down by 19.6% in volume, down by 21.2% in turnover and down by 1.9% in price compared to the first 3 months of 2024; accounting for 60.2% in total volume and 53.2% in total iron and steel import turnover of the whole country.
Japan ranked second with 570,223 tonnes, equivalent to 372.66 million USD, import price of 653.5 USD/tonne, up by 34.7% in volume, up by 20.9% in turnover but down 10.3% in price compared to the first 3 months of 2024, accounting for 15.2% of the total volume and 14.1% of the total turnover. The next was the Indonesian market with 311,104 tonnes, worth of 372.38 million USD, with the price of 1,197 USD/tonne, up sharply by 95.7% in volume, up by 49.6% in turnover but down by 23.6% in price compared to the first 3 months of 2024, accounting for 8.3% of the total volume and 14.1% of the total import turnover of iron and steel of the whole country.
