Chinese cars flood into Vietnam

AsemconnectVietnam - The number of imported cars from China has been increasing sharply recently.

According to information recently released by the Customs Department, in March of 2025, the country imported 21,640 cars of all kinds, with a total turnover of 445 million USD.
In comparison to the previous month, the number of imported cars of all kinds registered for customs declaration in March increased by 22.5% (equivalent to an increase of 3,969 cars).
Imported cars of all kinds registered for import procedures originated from Indonesia, Thailand and China.
In which, Indonesia led in the number of cars with 8,841 cars, an increase of 28.4% compared to the previous month; Thailand with 7,731 cars, an increase of 15%.
Notably, imported cars from China increased by 53.9% compared to the previous month, reaching 4,473 units.
Thus, the number of imported cars from the above 3 markets reached 21,045 units, accounting for 97% of the number of imported cars to Vietnam last month.
The most imported car type were cars with 9 seats or less, with 17,139 units in the month, with a total turnover of 296 million USD, accounting for 79.2% of the total imported cars of all kinds nationwide.
Hai Phong port area and Ho Chi Minh City were the 2 areas with the largest number of imported cars with 9 seats or less. Specifically, Hai Phong port area had 9,169 units, an increase of 78.4% (equivalent to an increase of 4,030 units) compared to the previous month; Ho Chi Minh City port area had 7,160 units, a decrease of 7.1% (equivalent to a decrease of 544 units).
Completely built-up cars with 9 seats or less registered for import in March of 2025 also mainly originated from 3 Asian markets, including Indonesia, Thailand and China.
Regarding the Chinese market, the number of cars imported from this country to Vietnam has recently increased significantly. In February of 2025, there were 2,919 cars, an increase of 15.4% compared to January of 2025.
Last year, the country imported 31,112 completely built-up cars from the Chinese market with a total turnover of 909 million USD, an increase of 180.2% in volume and 130% in turnover compared to 2023.
