Wood industry to be proactively adaptive and aims for 18 billion USD in export turnover

 Tuesday, April 22,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the export value of wood and wood products in March of 2025 was estimated at 1.5 billion USD, bringing the total export value of wood and wood products in the first quarter of the year to 3.95 billion USD, up by 11.6% over the same period of 2024.

The United States was the largest consumer market for wood and wood products in Vietnam, accounting for 53.1% of the market share. Japan and China were the next two largest markets with market shares of 13.2% and 10.6%, respectively.
In comparison to the same period last year, the export value of wood and wood products in the first two months of 2025 to the US market increased by 9.5%, the Japanese market increased by 21%, and the Chinese market decreased by 15.2%. In the group of 15 largest export markets, the export value of wood and wood products increased the most in the Indian market with an increase of 95.9% and decreased the most in the Dutch market with a decrease of 45.1%.
In 2025, the world political and economic situation is forecasted to continue to have many complex fluctuations affecting domestic and foreign commodity markets. Therefore, although some initial positive results have been achieved, compared to the export target set for the whole year, it requires breakthrough solutions and efforts from the business community.
Speaking to reporters of the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - CEO of Lam Viet Joint Stock Company - said that currently, the US market accounts for 50% of the company's revenue. Regarding the tariff policy of the Donald Trump administration, the company is very confident and hopeful about the Government's negotiations.
"Everything is still normal, currently the US market accounts for about 50% of total revenue. We have also received orders until the end of September, including customers until the end of the second quarter, and customers until the end of the third quarter of 2025," Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam informed.
In addition, the company has also negotiated with customer partners and agreed to share risks. At the same time, the company is also aiming for online export, reducing intermediaries. It is expected that in April, 3 containers of goods will be exported and tested for sale on the Amazon e-commerce platform.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, wood industry enterprises have been promoting market diversification for many years, including markets such as the UK, EU, Australia, Japan, Korea, etc. and are tending to open markets to the Middle East.
Wood processing industry to be proactively adaptive, aiming for sustainable development
In recent times, the Vietnamese wood processing industry has been affirming its solid position on the global trade map, not only with impressive export turnover but also thanks to strong and sustainable development. From a country that mainly exports raw materials, Vietnam has risen to become one of the world's leading centers for the production and supply of wooden furniture and interiors.
However, the wood industry is facing major challenges such as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, international political tensions, etc., requiring a timely response strategy.
In order for the Vietnamese wood industry to develop, Mr. Vo Quang Ha - Chairman of Tan Vinh Cuu Joint Stock Company (Tavico) - recommended that the wood industry must equip itself with a new mindset to adapt to the current difficulties. Going "two legs" in parallel with both the domestic and export markets, while repositioning the market, products, and raw material sources is what needs to be done at this time. On the part of the authorities, it is necessary to analyze the competitive advantages of each locality, identify each type of raw wood for each type of product.
The forestry and forest protection sector set a target of 18 billion USD in wood and forest product export turnover in 2025, aiming for 25 billion USD by 2030. In particular, the forestry sector sets a target of developing in association with green growth by 2030, with 100% of forest areas certified for sustainable forest management; 20% of natural forest areas upgraded in quality.
For wood and forest product processing and trading, focus on prioritizing the use of modern, automated, specialized equipment to create high value-added products. Develop high-quality human resources, upgrade facilities, etc. At the same time, we will also prioritize the development of wood trading centers, build an international wood products trading center, and open the market.
Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) has issued a full set of decrees, circulars and regulations to comply with international regulations on wood, wood products and non-timber forest products, developing in association with green growth, low emissions and environmental protection. In addition, the Vietnamese wood industry has been standardizing quality to meet international standards such as the Lacy Act (USA), the Anti-Illegal Logging Act (Australia), the Clean Wood Act (Japan), the Sustainable Wood Use Act (South Korea) and the European Union's regulations on combating deforestation. These efforts will help the wood and forest products industry not only develop but also contribute to the goal of reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
