 Monday, April 21,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam ranged from VND 155,000 to 156,000 per kg on April 21, 2025, holding steady compared to the same time yesterday. The market has remained flat for the past three days.

Dak Lak & Dak Nong: VND156,000/kg
Gia Lai, Dong Nai, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc: VND155,000/kg
Weekly Summary:
Prices fell by VND500–1,000/kg in Dak Lak and Dak Nong.
Ba Ria – Vung Tau remained stable.
Prices rose by VND1,000/kg in Dong Nai, Gia Lai, and Binh Phuoc.
Overall, the price gap between provinces has narrowed significantly. The previous week saw an increase of VND1,000–2,000/kg.
Export Outlook & Market Dynamics:
The International Pepper Community (IPC) raised Vietnam's pepper export reference price by USD200/ton this week.
Domestically, Vietnam’s pepper output is projected to decline due to prolonged drought in the Central Highlands and Southeast regions in early 2025.
While recent rains have somewhat eased drought stress, they came too late for harvested crops and may negatively impact flower bud differentiation, potentially reducing next year’s yield.
Despite the lower output, farmers are confident about current price levels. Most are selling cautiously without financial pressure, and the 2025 harvest season is expected to conclude by the end of April.
Market Forecast:
Experts predict an upward trend this week as companies are stocking up ahead of upcoming long holidays and concerns over supply linger. Exporters are accelerating shipments to Europe, India, and the Middle East to maintain market share amid unfavorable US countervailing tariffs.
International Prices (as of latest IPC update):
Black Pepper:
Lampung (Indonesia): USD7,056/ton
Brazil ASTA 570: USD6,900/ton
Kuching (Malaysia) ASTA: USD9,600/ton
White Pepper:
Muntok: USD9,641/ton
Malaysia ASTA: USD12,100/ton
Vietnam pepper export prices:
Black Pepper 500 g/l: USD6,800/ton
Black Pepper 550 g/l: USD6,900/ton
White Pepper: USD9,800/ton
Vietnam’s pepper industry urged to adapt amid global trade challenges
At the 2025 Annual Public-Private Partnership Group Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, experts stressed the need for Vietnamese pepper exporters to swiftly adapt to global trade fluctuations by improving product quality and seeking growth markets.
Export performance (Q1 2025):
Vietnam exported 39,853 tonnes of black pepper and 7,807 tonnes of white pepper, earning USD326.6 million.
Export volume dropped 16.1%, but export value rose 38.6% year-on-year due to higher global prices.
Key Markets:
USA: Largest market (10,278 tonnes), but volume dropped 32.6%.
India, Germany: Slight declines in volume.
UAE: Up 15.2%.
China: Surged 87.8%.
The industry is grappling with the US imposing a 10% import tariff and a pending 46% reciprocal tariff on certain Vietnamese goods. A 90-day negotiation period is underway.
Concerns & recommendations:
VPSA Chairwoman Hoang Thi Lien warned of losing US market share to Brazil and Indonesia if negotiations fail.
She advised exporters to maximize shipments during the grace period and diversify into Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
EU Market:
EU pepper imports rose 20% in 2024 (120,657 tonnes).
Vietnam’s share in EU exports climbed to 52.1%.
EU demands high quality and traceability, especially for white and organic pepper.
Sustainability & Strategic Vision (2026–2030):
IDH Vietnam praised joint efforts in sustainable production and farmer training.
Next strategic phase goals:
Improve quality and traceability
Diversify income via pepper–coffee intercropping
Enhance environmental resilience through regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, and emissions tracking.
