Global Coffee Market
In the latest trading session, Robusta coffee prices in London for May 2025 delivery increased by 5 USD/ton to 5,371 USD/ton, while July 2025 contracts dropped by 12 USD/ton to 5,388 USD/ton.
On the New York exchange, Arabica coffee for May 2025 delivery fell by 3.6 cents/lb to 385.25 cents/lb, while July 2025 contracts dropped 3.65 cents/lb to 381.75 cents/lb.
London Robusta prices showed mixed movements, while Arabica declined. The market reacted to the new U.S. tariffs expected to be imposed on several countries.
Nearby-month Robusta contracts rose slightly, while distant-month contracts declined, reflecting concerns that U.S. demand will weaken and that global economic conditions will deteriorate due to these tariffs.
Regarding Vietnamese coffee exports to the U.S., Phan Minh Thông, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company, told Tuổi Trẻ Online that U.S. partners had sent inquiries about the newly imposed tariffs. However, Vietnamese pepper and coffee exports to the U.S. will still enjoy a zero percent tariff.
Vietnam’s Coffee Exports in Early 2025
In the first two months of 2025, Germany remained Vietnam's largest coffee export market, with sales reaching 278 million USD (up 79%). Italy ranked second at 171 million USD (up 31%), followed by Japan at 127 million USD (up 56%), the U.S. at 120 million USD (up 53%), and Spain at 117 million USD (up 29%).
Analysts attribute the recent coffee price surge to traders in the U.S. increasing imports ahead of the anticipated tariff hike.
Now that the new tariffs have been announced—set at 10% for Brazil and Colombia, the world’s two largest Arabica exporters—the New York market has reacted with a price decline. However, with tariffs now significantly higher, coffee prices in the U.S. and globally are expected to keep rising.
