U.S. Pepper imports hit record high in 2024
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, the U.S. imported 97,974 tons of pepper in 2024, an increase of 41.9% compared to 2023. This marks the highest-ever pepper import volume for the U.S.
Vietnam remained the leading supplier to the U.S., accounting for 75,602 tons, representing 77.2% of the market share and increasing 41.8% compared to the previous year. Other suppliers included:
India: 7,750 tons (7.9% market share).
Indonesia: 7,708 tons (7.9% market share).
Brazil: 3,704 tons (3.8% market share).
Last year, U.S. importers increased purchases of pepper, offsetting the market gap left by China. In 2024, China reduced its pepper imports from Vietnam by 82.4% but increased imports from Indonesia by 76.8%. However, this increase was still insufficient to meet China’s total consumption demand.
Vietnam's Pepper imports surge in February 2025 amidst global supply decline
According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Vietnam imported 2,929 tons of pepper in February 2025, with a turnover of 15.9 million USD. This represents a 61% increase compared to January.
Black pepper imports: 1,716 tons
White pepper imports: 1,213 tons
Top suppliers: Indonesia and Brazil
In the first two months of 2025, Vietnam imported a total of 4,746 tons of pepper, including:
Black pepper: 2,469 tons
White pepper: 2,277 tons
Total import value: 26.8 million USD
Compared to the same period in 2024, import volume increased by 11.4%, while import value surged by 74.1%.
Top suppliers to Vietnam
Indonesia: 69.9% market share (largest supplier)
Brazil: 23.1% market share (second-largest supplier)
Vietnam’s Leading Role in the Global Pepper Market
Vietnam dominates the global pepper industry, accounting for:
40% of the world’s total production
60% of the global market share
Despite this leading position, Vietnam still imports pepper from other major producers to stabilize its market presence.
Global pepper production decline
According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), global pepper production in 2024 fell by 4% compared to 2023, decreasing by 22,000 tons to 558,000 tons.
Brazil experienced the steepest decline, with production dropping 29% (28,000 tons) from 98,000 tons (2023) to 70,000 tons (2024) due to severe drought and water shortages.
Vietnam’s production declined from 195,000 tons (2023) to 180,000 tons (2024). The total cultivation area is expected to shrink to 110,000 hectares in the near future, mainly due to: Adverse weather conditions, pest outbreaks and  higher profitability of competing crops (e.g., durian and coffee).
Pepper price surge in 2025
The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) predicts that global pepper production will continue to decline in 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline since 2022. Since the beginning of 2025, export prices for pepper have remained high, increasing by 30% compared to mid-2024.
White pepper export prices:
+16% vs. late December 2024
+38% vs. mid-2024
Outlook for 2025
In 2025, the market is expected to reverse, with the U.S. reducing imports while China ramps up purchases. However, reports from the first two months of the year indicate that Vietnam’s pepper exports to China remain low.
The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association forecasts that global pepper prices in 2025 will remain high due to a declining supply, while demand in key markets like the U.S. and Europe stays strong. The food and spice processing industry remains the primary driver of the market.
