Pepper Market Update (March 12, 2025): Prices Decline

 Wednesday, March 12,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinh tế & Đô Thị, the domestic pepper market saw a decline for the second consecutive day due to increased supply from the ongoing harvest. However, pepper prices remain significantly higher than in previous years, benefiting farmers.

 Domestic Pepper Prices (VND/kg):
Đắk Lắk: 158,500 (↓500)
Đắk Nông: 158,500 (↓800)
Gia Lai: 157,000
Đồng Nai: 156,000
Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu: 157,000
Bình Phước: 157,000
While prices declined slightly in Đắk Lắk and Đắk Nông, they remained stable in other regions. In contrast, domestic coffee prices have been rising sharply over the past two days.
Despite short-term benefits from rising pepper prices, farmers remain concerned due to unstable production and reduced cultivation areas.
Global Pepper Prices (USD/ton):
Indonesia (Lampung black pepper): 7,264 (↓0.63%)
Brazil (ASTA 570 black pepper): 6,900
Malaysia (Kuching black pepper ASTA): 9,800
Vietnam black pepper (500 g/l): 7,000
Vietnam black pepper (550 g/l): 7,200
Vietnam white pepper: 10,000
Indonesia (Muntok white pepper): 10,251 (↓0.63%)
Malaysia (ASTA white pepper): 12,300
Market Trends:
Last week, global pepper prices showed mixed trends.
Vietnam: Only white pepper recorded a decline.
India: Both domestic and export prices remained stable.
Sri Lanka: Domestic prices increased for the past two weeks.
Southeast Asia: Domestic and international prices rose, with fewer transactions recorded.
Brazil, Cambodia, and China: Prices remained stable.
The global demand for pepper remains high, suggesting potential price increases in the near future.
Vietnam's pepper export value surged by 52% in the first two months of 2025, despite a 9.4% decline in export volume.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, the country exported 28,000 tonnes of pepper during this period, generating an impressive revenue of 188.7 million USD.
Although its cultivation area is smaller than that of other major crops like coffee, rubber, tea, and cashew, pepper remains a high-value commodity. The area dedicated to pepper cultivation is equivalent to just 15% of the land used for coffee and 12% of the land for rubber. However, its export value accounts for 23% of coffee export earnings (5.6 billion USD) and over 38% of rubber export revenue (3.4 billion USD). These figures highlight the industry's untapped potential and offer promising opportunities for further growth.
To ensure long-term growth and sustainability, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is developing a master plan for industrial crop development through 2030. The strategy aims to maintain the pepper cultivation area between 80,000 and 100,000 hectares, targetign a yield of 2.4–2.5 tonnes per hectare and an annual production of 200,000–300,000 tonnes.
