Wednesday, March 12,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - According to data from the General Statistics Office ( the Ministry of Finance), in the first 2 months of the year, the two-way trade between Vietnam and the United States exceeded 22 billion USD.
The United States still maintained its position as Vietnam's largest export market.
Also in the first 2 months of 2025, the two-way trade between Vietnam and China continued to flourish and reached 31.2 billion USD. China is Vietnam's largest import market.
Vietnam - US trade exchange in the first 2 months of 2025
The data from the General Statistics Office (Ministry of Finance) showed that in the first 2 months of 2025, the export turnover to the US market reached 19.6 billion USD, down by 16.5% over the same period last year; while the imports of goods from the US reached 2.6 billion USD, up by 17.4% over the same period last year.
According to experts, in 2025, Vietnam's key export industries with many opportunities to export to the US market such as textiles, wooden handicrafts, electronic machinery and equipment, and agricultural products will continue to maintain positive growth momentum.
In 2025, the textile and garment industry expects to reach 25 billion USD in exports to the US market, growing thanks to the increasing demand for high-quality and environmentally friendly products.
The exports of wooden handicraft products are expected to reach about 10 billion USD in 2025, an increase of more than 20% compared to 2024. The trend of consuming sustainable and recycled furniture products in the US continues to be the main driving force behind this industry. In addition, high-tech products such as electronic components and telecommunications equipment also contribute greatly to total export turnover, with the value expected to increase by 15-18% thanks to the expansion of production from corporations such as Samsung, Intel and LG.
According to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, Vietnam is an important partner of the United States. Vietnamese goods exported to the United States mainly compete with third countries, not directly with US businesses in the US market. On the contrary, it also creates conditions for US consumers to use cheap Vietnamese goods.
In addition, Vietnam is an open economy, in the integration process, Vietnam pursues a free trade policy, the tariff difference on US goods is not much and in the coming time may continue to decrease, because Vietnam advocates reducing MFN tariffs on many goods.
Therefore, some US products with high competitive advantages such as: automobiles, agricultural products, liquefied gas, ethanol... will benefit from this policy, at the same time creating positive import flows from the United States, contributing to improving the trade balance between the two countries.
Currently, there is a policy dialogue mechanism between Vietnam and the United States established under the Vietnam-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement. Therefore, existing issues in bilateral trade and economy, if any, will be proactively discussed through the Vietnam-US Trade and Investment Council (TIFA).
This is a mechanism that is being maintained regularly, continuously and effectively, aiming to strengthen strategic trust between the two countries, create a common vision, contribute to long-term orientation and stabilize the development roadmap of bilateral economic and trade relations.
In addition, the Vietnamese Government has also proactively assigned ministries and branches to review obstacles, develop solutions to issues of concern to the United States; on the basis of fair trade, reciprocity, in accordance with the law, harmoniously and satisfactorily meeting the interests of all parties.
Vietnam - China trade exchange in the first 2 months of 2025
The data from the General Statistics Office - Ministry of Finance showed that in the first 2 months of 2025, Vietnam - China trade continued to grow. China is Vietnam's largest import market.
Specifically, in the first 2 months of 2025, export turnover to China reached 7.9 billion USD, down by 2.1% over the same period last year. The import turnover from this market reached 23.3 billion USD, up by 20.7% over the same period last year.
According to Mr. Nong Duc Lai, Trade Counselor of Vietnam in China, China is the leading important trade partner, the second largest export market and the largest source of goods, especially raw materials for production of Vietnam.
However, since the beginning of the year, China has tightened imports of a number of items from Vietnam, including durian. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the export value of fruits and vegetables in February 2025 is estimated at 350 million USD, bringing the total export value of fruits and vegetables in the first two months of 2025 to 724 million USD, while the same period last year reached 970 million USD.
In comparison to the same period last year, the export value of fruits and vegetables to the Chinese market decreased by 43%.
Fruit and vegetable exports to China decreased sharply, mainly due to the fact that since the beginning of this year, this country has tightened the inspection of residues of some chemicals in imported fruits from all countries, including durian - Vietnam's main export item.
Accordingly, all durian shipments to be exported to China must have results of analysis for cadmium residue and yellow O, conducted at laboratories recognized by this country. Therefore, durian exports to China had to be temporarily suspended to adapt to the new regulations. In the first 40 days of this year, about 3,500 tonnes of durian were exported to China, down by 80% compared to the same period last year. This is one of the reasons why exports to China decreased in the first 2 months of the year. Authorities are urgently looking for solutions to increase exports to this market.
