Pepper Prices Today, March 11, 2025: Domestic Prices Drop Below 160,000 VND/kg, Brazil's Pepper Rises Again

 Tuesday, March 11,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinh tế & Đô thị, domestic pepper prices on March 11, 2025, range from 157,000 to 162,000 VND/kg. A sharp decline at the start of the week pushed domestic pepper prices below the 160,000 VND/kg mark, while the International Pepper Community (IPC) recorded a slight increase in Brazilian pepper prices.

• Đắk Lắk: 159,000 VND/kg (-2,000 VND).
• Đắk Nông: 159,300 VND/kg (-2,700 VND).
• Gia Lai: 157,000 VND/kg (-2,000 VND).
• Đồng Nai: 156,000 VND/kg (-1,000 VND).
• Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu: 157,000 VND/kg (-2,000 VND).
• Bình Phước: 157,000 VND/kg (-2,000 VND).
Domestic pepper prices fell by 1,000–2,700 VND/kg compared to the same time yesterday. The sharp drop at the beginning of the week was due to the new harvest entering the market, putting pressure on prices.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam exported 28,000 tons of pepper in February 2025, generating $188.7 million in revenue. Although the export volume decreased by 9.4% compared to February 2024, the value surged nearly 52% due to higher prices.
High initial-season pepper prices encourage farmers to invest in cultivation and improve productivity in the coming years. However, newly planted areas will need time to yield crops, making a short-term production recovery in key producing countries like Vietnam unlikely.
Global Pepper Market Update
In the latest trading session, the IPC listed the following prices:
• Black pepper:
o Lampung (Indonesia): $7,376/ton.
o Brazil ASTA 570: $6,900/ton (+0.72%).
o Kuching (Malaysia) ASTA: $9,800/ton.
• White pepper:
o Muntok: $10,242/ton.
o Malaysia ASTA: $12,300/ton.
• Vietnamese pepper:
o Black pepper 500 g/l: $7,000/ton.
o Black pepper 550 g/l: $7,200/ton.
o White pepper: $10,000/ton.
The IPC reported a slight increase in Brazilian pepper prices.
Global Pepper Production Decline
In 2024, global pepper production declined by about 4% compared to 2023, equivalent to a 22,000-ton decrease, bringing total output to 558,000 tons. This reduction mainly came from Brazil and Vietnam.
Brazil experienced the steepest drop, with a 29% decline (28,000 tons), from 98,000 tons in 2023 to just 70,000 tons in 2024. The production shortfall was largely due to climate change, particularly prolonged droughts that led to water shortages for irrigation.
Vietnam's pepper export value surged by 52% in the first two months of 2025, despite a 9.4% decline in export volume.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, the country exported 28,000 tonnes of pepper during this period, generating an impressive revenue of 188.7 million USD.
Although its cultivation area is smaller than that of other major crops like coffee, rubber, tea, and cashew, pepper remains a high-value commodity. The area dedicated to pepper cultivation is equivalent to just 15% of the land used for coffee and 12% of the land for rubber. However, its export value accounts for 23% of coffee export earnings (5.6 billion USD) and over 38% of rubber export revenue (3.4 billion USD). These figures highlight the industry's untapped potential and offer promising opportunities for further growth.
To ensure long-term growth and sustainability, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is developing a master plan for industrial crop development through 2030. The strategy aims to maintain the pepper cultivation area between 80,000 and 100,000 hectares, targetign a yield of 2.4–2.5 tonnes per hectare and an annual production of 200,000–300,000 tonnes.
