Market Trends & Analysis:
• Despite the Indian Rupee depreciating by 1% against the USD (87.25 INR/USD), India’s domestic and international pepper prices have risen for the past three weeks.
• Sri Lanka’s domestic pepper prices continue to rise since the beginning of the year, coinciding with the country’s 77th Independence Day celebrations.
• Indonesia’s domestic and export pepper prices increased last week due to low reported stock levels in the market.
• Brazil’s black pepper prices also rose last week.
• Cambodia’s black pepper and China’s white pepper prices remain stable, as the Chinese market is still slow after the Lunar New Year holiday.
Market Outlook:
The latest Ptexim report states that demand from China for Indian pepper remains strong. Other major markets, including the US and the EU, are also purchasing black pepper through both long-term and immediate orders.
The harvest season is progressing slowly due to labor shortages and climate change. Many farmers and dealers anticipate further price increases, with some selling coffee and durian to buy and stockpile pepper in anticipation of higher prices in 2025.
