Rice Prices on January 20: Export Prices Drop to Two-Year Lows

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, domestic rice prices remained stable on January 20. The domestic rice market showed slow trading, with farmers selling sporadically and traders hesitant to buy. There were no fluctuations in paddy and rice prices in the Mekong Delta.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang Province, the current prices for wet paddy are as follows:
  • IR 50404: 6,200 - 6,400 VND/kg
  • OM 5451: 6,500 - 6,700 VND/kg
  • OM 18: 7,600 - 7,800 VND/kg
  • Fragrant rice 5% broken (Dai Thom 8): 7,600 - 7,800 VND/kg
  • OM 380: 6,600 - 6,700 VND/kg
  • Japonica rice: 7,800 - 8,000 VND/kg
  • Nang Hoa fragrant rice ( Nang Hoa 9): 9,200 VND/kg
In several localities, new paddy trading continued to be slow:
  • Dong Thap: Winter-Spring paddy transactions remained sluggish. Farmers slightly increased prices for early-harvested paddy but faced low buyer demand.
  • Soc Trang: Buying activity remained weak, and paddy prices stayed relatively stable.
  • Can Tho and Kien Giang: After the Lunar New Year, farmers offered higher prices for paddy but encountered limited buyers and slow transactions.
Similarly, for rice:
  • According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang Province, the current prices for raw and processed rice are as follows:
    • Raw IR 504 rice: 7,800 - 8,000 VND/kg
    • Processed IR 504 rice: 9,500 - 9,700 VND/kg
    • Raw OM 380 rice: 7,550 - 7,700 VND/kg
    • Processed OM 380 rice: 8,800 - 9,000 VND/kg
For by-products:
  • Prices ranged from 5,700 - 7,200 VND/kg.
    • Fragrant broken rice: 7,000 - 7,200 VND/kg
    • Dry bran: 5,700 - 5,800 VND/kg
In specific markets:
  • Sa Dec (Dong Thap): Supply was sparse, prices were stable, and some traders ceased milling.
  • Lap Vo - Vam Cong (Dong Thap): Supply dwindled by the weekend, with stable rice prices but slow trading.
  • An Cu (Cai Be, Tien Giang): Supplies were low, with fewer high-quality rice varieties available, and prices remained stable.
Retail rice prices at local markets remained unchanged from the previous day:
  • Regular rice: 15,000 - 17,000 VND/kg
  • Nang Nhen rice: 28,000 VND/kg
  • Jasmine fragrant rice: 18,000 - 20,000 VND/kg
  • Nang Hoa rice: 21,500 VND/kg
  • Thai fragrant long-grain rice: 20,000 - 22,000 VND/kg
  • Huong Lai rice: 22,000 VND/kg
  • Standard white rice: 17,500 VND/kg
  • Taiwanese fragrant rice: 21,000 VND/kg
  • Soc regular rice: 18,000 VND/kg
  • Soc Thai rice: 21,000 VND/kg
  • Japonica rice: 22,500 VND/kg
Export Market:
Vietnam’s rice export prices remained steady compared to yesterday. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA):
  • 5% broken rice: 419 USD/ton
  • 25% broken rice: 395 USD/ton
  • 100% broken rice: 326 USD/ton
Outlook:
In 2025, rice exports from various countries, including Vietnam, are expected to face more challenges than in 2024 due to a more abundant global rice supply.
According to the latest updates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade as of January 18, 2025, Vietnam’s rice export prices have rapidly declined after years of peak levels. Current prices are at their lowest in two years.
