DAILY: Vietnamese coffee prices increased by 500-1000 VND per kg on January 20, 2024

 Monday, January 20,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - According to Kinhtedothi, robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area, increased by 500-1000VND per kg to 119,300–120,000 VND per kg on Monday compared to Yesterday.

Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND120,000/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND119,300/kg. Robusta coffee increased to VND119,300 per kg in Bao Loc, Di Linh, Lam Ha; to VND119,900-120,000 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND119,900-120,000 per kg in Dak Nong; to VND119,800 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND119,700- 119,800 per kg in Gia Lai.
Market Outlook for This Week:
Experts suggest that an upward trend dominates the market as Vietnam’s coffee supply slows down due to the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, and the net long position on both exchanges decreases.
Domestic Harvest Progress:
  • Over 70% of the coffee-growing area has been harvested, with about 90% expected to be completed before the Lunar New Year.
  • This year’s harvest is notably later than usual due to several factors:
    1. Unusual weather: The rainy season ended late, with frequent unseasonal rains, particularly during Typhoon No. 10 in the East Sea at the end of December 2024, which caused widespread rainfall in the Central Highlands.
    2. Replanting efforts: Farmers in the Central Highlands have replanted with new coffee varieties that mature later.
Production and Yield:
  • Initial forecasts predicted a 10-15% decline in production. However, the current outlook suggests a milder decrease of about 5% compared to the previous crop year.
  • Reasons for this improvement:
    • Despite early-season droughts and severe dry conditions affecting many coffee-growing regions, some areas like Gia Lai had sufficient irrigation, leading to good yields.
    • New replanted varieties also demonstrated higher productivity.
  • As a result, the actual decline in yield for the entire crop year is less significant than initially anticipated.
Export Performance in Q4/2024:
  • Vietnam exported 208,000 tons of coffee, valued at USD 1.16 billion.
  • Compared to Q4/2023, this represents a 44% decrease in volume but a 4% increase in value.
Conclusion:
The market is bolstered by limited supply, slightly reduced production, and higher export value, supporting an optimistic outlook for prices this week.
