DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices remained unchanged on January 14, 2024

 Tuesday, January 14,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - On Tuesday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.

At the close of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 7,155 USD/ton, up 4.39%; the price of Brazil ASTA 570 black pepper was 6,350 USD/ton; and the price of Kuching (Malaysia) ASTA black pepper was 8,700 USD/ton.
The price of Muntok white pepper was 9,248 USD/ton, up 3.19%, while Malaysia ASTA white pepper was priced at 11,100 USD/ton.
Vietnam black pepper was traded at 6,350 USD/ton for the 500 g/l variety, and 6,650 USD/ton for the 550 g/l variety; white pepper was priced at 9,550 USD/ton. IPC unexpectedly raised the price of pepper in Indonesia significantly.  Vietnam's pepper import structure in 2024 shows a significant shift, with Indonesia and Cambodia replacing Brazil as major suppliers. Specifically: Indonesia became the largest exporter of pepper to Vietnam, with 17,194 tons, a strong increase of 431.2% compared to the previous year. Cambodia also saw impressive growth, increasing by 80.7% to reach 6,798 tons. In contrast, Brazil experienced a sharp decline in pepper exports to Vietnam, down 42.4% to 9,558 tons, mainly due to transportation difficulties and the impact of El Niño, which reduced production.
The decline in exports from Brazil was primarily due to the effects of El Niño, which reduced Brazil's pepper yield in the 2024 season. Additionally, the rising cost of shipping made Brazilian pepper less competitive than before.
The shift in Vietnam's import structure indicates that domestic businesses are increasingly turning to Southeast Asian countries, especially Indonesia and Cambodia, due to lower prices and more favorable transportation options.
Although the average import price of Brazilian pepper increased by 23.2%, it remains the lowest among the top 19 countries importing pepper from Brazil.
