Import of EU goods into Vietnam up 12.48% in the first 10 months of 2024

 Tuesday, December 24,2024

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2024, Vietnam will continue to increase its imports from the EU of machinery, equipment, tools, spare parts, chemicals, etc. Vietnam has also made significant strides in importing goods from partner countries in the EVFTA.

In general, imports from the EU have had positive impacts on Vietnam's economy:
Supply diversification: EVFTA reduces import taxes, so Vietnamese consumers have a wide choice of high-quality goods with diverse forms. In addition to consumer benefits, imports from the EU also promote competition and encourage innovation. Thereby, Vietnam improves its competitiveness in the international market.
Technology transfer: Since 2019, the EU has implemented the European Green Deal. This agreement applies not only to the EU but also to partners. In that context, the EU supports Vietnam to switch to green and circular production, meeting EU regulations and standards and in line with the trend of sustainable development.
Importing modern raw materials and machinery has helped Vietnam increase productivity and competitive quality.
Calculations from Vietnam Customs data show that in the first 10 months of 2024, the import turnover of goods from the EU  reached over 13.87 billion USD, up 12.48% over the same period in 2023. In 2024, this figure is estimated at 16 billion USD, an increase of 12.5% compared to 2023.
The proportion of import turnover of goods from the EU to the total import turnover of the country in the first 10 months of 2024 reached 4.40%, down from 4.67% in the first 10 months of 2023.
Calculations from Vietnam Customs data show that in the first 10 months of 2024, imports from most key markets in the EU increased turnover over the same period in 2023.

After more than 4 years of implementing EVFTA, there has been a shift in the import market structure among members. Gradually increasing the proportion of imports to the markets of Austria, France, Italy and Belgium while narrowing the proportion of exports to the Irish market.
According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 10 months of 2024, three groups of imported goods from the European Union (EU) reached a turnover of over 1 billion USD. These groups are: Computers, electronic products, and components; Machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts; and Pharmaceuticals.
The largest import group from the EU in the past 10 months is computers, electronic products, and components, with a turnover of over 3 billion USD, accounting for 22.2% of the total import turnover from this market, marking an increase of 21.79% compared to the same period in 2023.
The second-largest group is machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts, with a turnover of over 2.5 billion USD, accounting for 18% of the total import turnover, and increasing by 4.33% compared to the same period in 2023.
The third group is pharmaceuticals, with a turnover of over 1.88 billion USD, accounting for 13.62% of the total import turnover, and seeing a growth of 32.57% compared to the same period in 2023.
Overall, these groups not only make a significant contribution to the total import turnover from the EU but also reflect strong growth trends in the fields of technology, manufacturing, and healthcare in Vietnam.
