Vietnam to promote agricultural exports to Japan

 Thursday, December 26,2024

AsemconnectVietnam - High quality standards like those of Japan have become a driving force for Vietnamese agricultural products to constantly improve to meet the expectations of global consumers, while building a strong brand for Vietnamese agricultural products on the world map.

Many product groups have not had the opportunity to penetrate deeply into the Japanese market
Assessing the potential of the Japanese market, speaking at the workshop "Connecting supply chains and meeting the market", Mr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that Japan is a developed industrial country, has modern agriculture and has many advantages in applying high technology to agricultural production. However, Japanese agriculture only meets over 45% of domestic consumption demand and still has to import agricultural products every year. This is considered an advantage for Vietnam to expand the export of agricultural products to Japan.
Currently, Vietnam exports to Japan the main agricultural products such as: seafood, rice, coffee, vegetables, fruits, etc. Data from the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development shows that in 2023, the export value of some agricultural products to Japan increased. Specifically, the country’s exports of vegetables and fruits in 2023 reached 176.2 million USD, equivalent to 106.7% of the turnover in 2022. The coffee exports in 2023 reached 111,000 tonnes, equivalent to 101.6% of the volume in 2022 with a turnover of 319 million USD, equivalent to 114.9% of the turnover in 2022. Particularly, seafood exports in 2023 reached more than 1.5 billion USD, down by 10.9% compared to 2022.
Currently, Vietnam's agricultural export group to Japan only stops at 6 main groups, while some of Vietnam's strong agricultural products such as rice, tea, and livestock products have not had the opportunity to export and penetrate deeply into the Japanese market. In general, the export value of agricultural products accounts for less than 2% of the total export value of goods from Vietnam to Japan. Thus, the potential for agricultural exports from Vietnam to Japan is relatively large.
At the same time, in the context of international integration, high quality standards such as those of Japan have become the driving force for Vietnamese agricultural products to constantly improve to meet the expectations of global consumers, building a strong brand for Vietnamese agricultural products on the world map. Notably, Vietnam's construction of an effective supply chain not only strengthens the connection between farmers, businesses and distributors but also helps increase product value, meeting the needs of domestic and international markets. To achieve this requires close cooperation between stakeholders, from applying new technologies in production and preservation, to optimizing logistics systems and market access.
