Coffee Imports into EU Member States in the first half of 2024
Tuesday, October 22,2024AsemconnectVietnam - The EU is a central hub for large roasting companies. These companies import raw coffee beans from coffee-producing countries, including Vietnam, and then process, package, and export them to other EU countries.
Coffee imports under HS codes 0901 and 2101 have shown a significant increase in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to data from the World Trade Organization's International Trade Centre (ITC). Specifically, coffee imports were valued at 12.94 billion USD, representing a 4.9% increase year-on-year.
Germany ranked first in terms of coffee import value in the first six months of 2024, with imports reaching 3 billion USD, an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This accounted for 22.5% of the EU's total coffee imports, slightly lower than the 23.2% share in the same period of 2023. Germany is a major coffee-consuming market in Europe, with per capita consumption of approximately 6.5 kg per year, higher than the EU average of around 5.2 kg per year.
France ranked second, with coffee imports valued at 1.811 billion USD in the first six months of 2024, a decrease of 1.74% compared to the same period last year. This represented nearly 15% of the EU's total coffee imports, higher than the nearly 14% share in the same period of 2023. Italy came in third with a value of 1.491 billion USD, a 11.86% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This accounted for 11% of the total, slightly lower than the 12% share in 2023. As coffee is an integral part of Italian culture, Italy is one of the largest importers of green coffee beans in Europe. The country often imports a significant proportion of Robusta beans, commonly used as a base in espresso blends. During this period, 20 EU member states reported increased coffee imports compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, Bulgaria saw a 24.5% increase to 125 thousand USD, Spain a 21.23% increase to 947 thousand USD, and Hungary a 14.57% increase to 142 thousand USD. Conversely, 8 EU member states reported a decline in coffee imports, with Belgium experiencing the largest decrease of 10.20% to 841 thousand USD, followed by Luxembourg at 11% to 70 thousand USD, and Latvia at 8.52% to 53 thousand USD.
