Vietnam imports 7.8 billion USD of goods from Thailand

According to statistics from International Trade Center (ITC), in the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam was Thailand's 8th largest source of goods, accounting for 2.94% of Thailand's total import turnover, an improvement from 2.7% in the same period in 2023. According to statistics from General Department of Customs, in August 2024, Vietnam's exports to Thai market reached 623.08 million USD, down 10.58% compared to the previous month and down 4.23% compared to the same month last year.
Total export turnover in the first 8 months of this year reached 5.23 billion USD, up 7.29% over the same period last year.
Decline in August could be explained by a number of reasons, including fluctuations in demand from the Thai market, changes in supply chain or seasonal factors. In particular, Thailand's consumption demand may have changed, affecting amount of goods imported from Vietnam.
However, cumulative increase in the first 8 months of the year shows that Vietnam's exports to Thailand have maintained positive growth momentum.
Topping list of the most exported items to Thailand in the first 8 months of 2024 are machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts with export turnover in August reaching 100.41 million USD, up 1.62% over the previous month and up 11.32% over the same month last year.
Total export turnover of this item in the first 8 months reached 666.71 million USD, accounting for 12.73% of Vietnam's total export turnover to Thailand.
In contrast, export turnover of mobile phones and components recorded a sharp decline in the same period. In August 2024, export turnover of this item only reached 40.3 million USD, down 40.71% compared to the previous month and down 49.43% compared to the same month last year. Total export turnover of this item in 8 months reached 608.06 million USD, down 13.66% compared to the same period last year, accounting for 11.61% of total export turnover of goods from Vietnam to Thailand.
On contrary, in August 2024, Vietnam's import of goods from the Thai market had remarkable developments. Specifically, import turnover from Thailand this month reached 1.09 billion USD, down 7.24% compared to the previous month but up 13.62% compared to the same period last year.
Accumulated in the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam's total import turnover from Thailand reached 7.8 billion USD, up 1.31% over the same period last year.
In the first 8 months of 2024, computers, electronic products and components were the items with the largest import turnover from the Thai market. In August 2024, import turnover of this group of items reached 102.12 million USD, down 6.55% compared to the previous month and down 22.68% compared to the same month last year.
In the first 8 months of 2024, total import turnover of computers, electronic products and components from Thailand reached 799.46 million USD, down 34.84% over the same period last year, although this item accounted for 10.25% of Vietnam's total import turnover of goods from Thailand in the first 8 months of 2024.
