DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices rose by 1,500-2,000 VND per kg on October 10, 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - On Thursday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands rose by 1,500-2,000 VND per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.

Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association informed that in September 2024, Vietnam imported 2,430 tonnes of pepper, of which black pepper reached 2,233 tonnes, white pepper reached 197 tons, total import turnover reached 13.6 million USD. Compared to August, import volume increased by 63%. Olam, Phuc Sinh and Tran Chau are the 3 main importers. Indonesia was the largest pepper supplier to Vietnam, reaching 1,787 tonnes, up 460.2% over the previous month.
As of September 30, 2024, Vietnam imported 23,778 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, of which black pepper reached 20,890 tonnes, and white pepper reached 2,888 tonnes.Total import turnover reached 102.0 million USD. Compared to the same period in 2023, import volume increased by 15.8%. The main importers include: Olam Vietnam, Pearl Group, KSS Vietnam, Phuc Sinh and Lien Thanh, of which Olam holds the largest market share of 35.7%, reaching 8,498 tonnes, up 11.0%. Brazil, Cambodia and Indonesia are the three main pepper suppliers to Vietnam, accounting for 90.3%, reaching 8,512 tonnes, 6,651 tonnes and 6,317 tonnes, respectively, of which imports from Brazil decreased by 32%. Of which, imports from Cambodia increased by 95.4% and Indonesia increased by 134.2%.
Vietnam could ship more than 1 billion USD worth of pepper abroad for the whole 2024 on the back of high global demand and limited supply, according to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA). The pepper industry, the association said, is on track to return to the "billion-dollar" club, with export revenues hitting 764.2 million USD as of July 30.
During the seven-month span, more than 164,300 tonnes of pepper was sold to foreign markets at an average export price of 4,568 USD per tonne for black pepper and 6,195 USD per tonne for white pepper, up 32.7% and 25%, respectively, year on year. The US was the largest purchaser, followed by Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and India.
Brazil, the world’s second biggest black pepper producer and exporter, has suffered crop failure, driving global prices skyward for the remaining months of 2024. Production in Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia is also forecast to fall sharply due to the impacts of El Nino.
