Robusta coffee rose to 124,700VND per kg in Bao Loc, Di Linh, Lam Ha; to 125,100-125,200VND per kg in Dak Lak; to 125,300-125,400VND per kg in Dak Nong; to 125,200VND per kg in Kon Tum, and to 125,100-125,200VND per kg in Gia Lai.
Germany has overtaken Italy to become the biggest buyer of Vietnam's coffee in both volume and value by spending over US$380 million on more than 112,000 metric tons from the Southeast Asian country in the first half of this year, according to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA).
In January-June, Vietnam exported coffee to more than 80 countries, earning US$3.1 billion.
Germany accounted for the highest, at $383 million, followed by Italy with $276 million and Japan with $238 million.
Besides the top three, other key markets for Vietnamese coffee exports in the period were Spain, Russia, the U.S., Indonesia, the Philippines, the Netherlands, and China.
According to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnamese exporters shipped out nearly 893,000 metric tons of coffee in the first half of this year, earning $3.1 billion.
Vietnam, the leading Robusta producer, is forecasted to maintain its production at nearly 29.0 million bags, with over 95% being Robusta. However, the delayed rainy season and above-average temperatures have adversely affected yields. Additionally, reduced groundwater and forest cover pose long-term challenges, as many coffee growers rely on wells for irrigation. The country has implemented several sustainability initiatives, including replacing old coffee trees, intercropping to increase shade and water retention, and adopting water-saving irrigation systems. Despite these efforts, bean exports are forecasted to drop by nearly 500,000 bags to 24.4 million due to reduced total supply and rising domestic consumption.
Forecasting coffee market trends for the last six months of 2024, based on factors such as weather conditions, crop yields, and global consumption demand, coffee prices may not cool down soon. The global coffee supply remains unstable due to climate change impacts and geopolitical factors.
However, Vietnam, with favourable climate conditions and government support policies, has a great opportunity to increase production and exports. In general, amidst the volatile global coffee market, the efforts and innovation of Vietnamese businesses and farmers will play a decisive role in maintaining the position and sustainable development of the coffee industry.
